I ask you: is there anyone versed in consolation?

For in the night of my sorrow, it was lost—or the paths of my eyelids [text unclear].

And have you any knowledge of my patience—that I

have lost gracious patience in the most painful loss?

They say, "Ease some of the burning grief you bear."

What the afflicted suffers seems slight to the carefree.

The earth grows narrow around me, though it is spacious,

as a money-belt's fastening tightens above the waist.

And longing, dwelling within my ribs, never ceases,

whenever I stray from passion's collar, to counsel me.

What you see at my hair-parting is not gray hair,

but many calamities of different colors.

And my eyes were kept awake—grief stirring grief—

by a collared dove lamenting on a ban-tree bough.

Whose ruined camps are these, their traces lamenting erasure,

like psalm-script in the sacred books of monks?

I stood there shedding blood, as though

imminent separation drew near me with an offering.

The dwellings of those who, whenever a horizon darkened,

were stars whose light dispelled the night of my sorrows.

    فلَهْفِي عَلَيْهَا مِنْ ثَلاَثَةِ شُهْبَانِ

    They fell from a sky they had once adorned;

alas for those three shooting stars!

Time struck me with Ya'qub's loss, and afterward

struck me with Ibrahim's: those were two arrows.

And if calamities differ in their gravity,

none equals my loss of Ahmad ibn Sulayman.

For even if I have enclosed my pure delight

and all my companionship between a grave-niche and shrouds,

by God, time has not made me forget the first

through the second, nor did the third make me forget the second.

Death's vicissitudes betrayed them, carrying them away,

as a necklace of pure gold once scattered.

    One departed predecessor followed another,

as white-blazed steeds race on a racecourse.

My life for him whom I greeted, who then slighted me!

Had he returned my greeting, he would have revived me.

I remember him: whenever I called, though between him

and me lay wilderness, torrent, and horses, he answered me.

    فَأيْنَ لِقَلْبِي مِنْهُ بِالشَّاحِطِ الدَّانِي

    His dwelling drew near me, but visiting him grew distant;

how can my heart reach him, so far yet so near?

Ah, would that my life's passing days had never granted me

the affection of a dear friend who departed and left me alone.

Had my soul perceived—and I am indeed a poet—

him on the day he struck me down, I would have rolled up my sleeves.

It is death: it chooses the best and selects

the fruit of this world's children, as a fruit-picker does.

    أبى الدَّهْرُ أَنْ يُبْقِي عَلَى الدَّثِرِ الفَانِي

    Do not acquire what perishes, and you will live with a peaceful heart;

time refuses to spare what decays and perishes.

    وَكَمْ نِسْبَةٍ مَا بَيْنَ رُوحٍ وَجُثْمَانِ

    A man's friend, truth rightly understood, is his soul;

and how strong the bond between soul and body!

What is a wrist without the support of a forearm?

And what is an eye whose pupil has been stricken?

Suppose I were safe from calamities, and they did not frighten

my heart, and time left me alone and adorned me:

is not every compound bound for dissolution—

a premise on which no two have disagreed?

    فَإِنْ قُلْتُ قَضَّانِي الْحُقُوقَ تَقَاضَانِي

    Time slips its snare for me into my hopes;

if I say, "It has paid me my dues," it demands payment from me.

    لَقَدْ زِدْتُ فِي فَرْضِ الأَمَانِي عَلَى بَانِي

    Yet I hope for permanence in a dwelling meant to be abandoned;

in constructing hopes, I have indeed outdone a builder.

    وَلاَ أُنْسُ إِنْسَانٍ مُصَابَكَ أَنْسَانِي

    O Ya'qub, my grief for you is not ending;

no person's companionship has made me forget your loss.

Nor have the jewels of the adorned beguiled me in your absence,

nor has my pleasant life distracted me while you are far away.

Who will grant me tears pouring from my eye-sockets

for you, and a bewildered heart lodged in my throat?

I traced my tears' lineage to the water of heaven,

and it bequeathed me anemones of Nu'man within them.

When the wind of sighing drives their clouds,

heavy with rain, recurring showers from them water the old haunts.

Before today my tears were pure,

but my persistence in weeping has made me bleed.

You were indeed a strong pillar for me, and an arm

far-reaching, and treasured for my private and public life.

    فَقَدْ كُنْتَ رَوْحِي فِي الْحَيَاةِ وَرَيْحَانِي

    May sweet basil, repose, and divine favor clothe your grave;

for you were my solace in life and my sweet basil.

May a cloud of mercy rain generously upon your resting-place,

each thick, streaming cloud from it greeting you.

Ibrahim was nothing but a garden

of excellence, yielding its fruit in every season.

Faithful to a guarded secret, steadfast

in concealing it, though a breast grew strained by concealment.

Even if those beauties have decayed in the earth,

my grief stays fresh as long as day and night endure.

Ah for them, for their bliss and freshness!

Alas for him, for his youth and its prime!

I remembered you when the days were peaceful and our company

    was united, and time's eye was not awake;

the dew-sprinkled narcissus had the stare of eyes,

    and the lush myrtle the pointed shape of ears;

the sun swayed, inclining toward sunset,

as a dinar tips the pan of a balance.

    فَمَا تَنْقَعُ الرَّمْضَاءُ غُلَّةَ ظَمْآنِ

    A carpet time has folded away, save in memory;

the scorching ground cannot quench a thirsty man's burning thirst.

When friends are mentioned, who is like Ahmad?

Indeed, every pasture after him is no sa'dan pasture.

The treasure of my days, the central bead of my necklace,

    the essence of my devotion, the wisdom of my collected verse;

the one who, if I lost my direction while seeking knowledge,

guided me to the clear road and supported my steps.

A martyr: my eye wrung out its blood over him,

as though they had buried him between my eyelids.

Dear friends who were a resource amid hardships,

when raging calamities bore fresh calamities as fruit.

Death's abode longed for them, and they departed,

settling beside God as the noblest guests.

They deserve to be envied, since they moved

to the everlasting world from the perishing world.

How swift the meeting, though the distance be great!

How small the gap between the hastening and the laggard!

    وَغِبْتُمْ فَأَحْضَرْتُمْ لَوَاعِجَ أَحْزَانِي

    You rested, and stirred the hellfire within my ribs;

you vanished, and brought forth the burning pangs of my sorrows.

You headed toward everlasting bliss, while I

am surely wretched—alas for my misery through Nu'man's inhabitants!

And if I gave my soul its due—

for I am no traitor to that noble bond—

I would weep over your graves without ceasing,

    until people said, "An idol-worshipper!"

And cry to the caravan of justice: "Do not direct a passing thought

against my faithful bond, for it is my faith's twin."

There is no shame in coming to death, for it is

the path of all people, old and young.

By your life, time never runs clear for one who comes to drink,

however long it lasts, while two battle-lines stoke war's blaze.

    فَرُبَّ قِيَاسٍ كَانَ أَصْلاً لِبُرْهَانِ

    Compare what is coming of its affairs with what has passed;

many an analogy has been the foundation of a proof.

Have not its vicissitudes left Kisra broken,

and has not the king of the Alans yielded to its assaults?

It stretched the hands of its aggression toward Sayf,

and forcibly drew him from Ghumdan's sheath.

Did Tubba's followers repel a calamity?

Did Sasan's statecraft ward off distress?

    فَأَلقَى إِلَى الدُّنْيَا مَقَادَةَ إِذْعَانِ

    Al-Sa'b's reins were hard to seize, well defended;

yet he cast to the world the reins of submission.

It unveiled its frowning face to the sons of al-'Abbas,

and earlier made the sons of Marwan's drink bitter.

How often it disappointed a caliph's varied hopes,

and time's winds withered the ailments of crowns [text unclear].

It left the palace, whose structure was lofty,

at Sindad a barren wasteland after its flourishing.

Even if it should one day preserve al-Khawarnaq's splendor,

it has not mended the damage in Shi'b Bawwan either.

How many a proud man has his time subjected to compulsion,

showing him, after favor, an angry face!

And many a bearer of a blade sharp on both edges in battle

had two flies attack his proud nose.

What joy has not returned with sorrow?

What perfection has not been followed by deficiency?

Whoever sells what endures for something perishing

has hastened a losing bargain in his worldly life.

Accept this, despite the distance of separation, from a sleepless man,

a companion of grief—behold, yearning within his ribs.

By God, I have not fulfilled affection's due,

but this is my capacity and the limit of my ability.

Whenever the long-winded and the brief are equal

in circumstance, speech and silence have the same standing.

I bear no blame for failing to attain what is lost,

for what has defeated all mankind has defeated me.
