وقالَ ولمْ يُرْشَدْ لحِذْقٍ ولا كَيْسِ
He saw my cheek-whiskers when he noticed his belly’s ailment,
When the quack saw my sickness of belly
And said, with neither skill nor good sense:
And said, though not wisely nor aptly,
ألمْdid you not تدْرِyou know أنّيthat I عِلّةَan ailment البطْنِthe belly أشْتَكيI suffer from
ألمْ تدْرِ أنّي عِلّةَ البطْنِ أشْتَكي

Did you not know that I suffer from a belly ailment,
"Don't you know, sir, the pain in your belly I seek to allay
And that a he-goat’s beard helps whoever suffers from it?
Is cured by applying the beard of a goat, they say!"
