    God's peace—blessed be this greeting—

Upon the grave of the imam, son of the imam.

And rain, then rain, then rain,

As the clouds' eyelid pours down its tears,

Until the lowlands overflow, well watered,

And the tent-pegs put forth leaves from it.

Heralding divine favor morning and evening,

So the blossoms in their sheaths smile in response.

And were it not glad tidings and mercy,

The flower-sheaths would not have dared to smile.

O my lord, enjoy your sleep in a resting-place

    That brings you immense blessings.

The south wind blows along its sides,

And brings you peace from the Source of Peace,

Until you dwell in the abode of Eden

    And attain everlasting bliss.

    فَمَا الدُّنْيَا سِوَى حُلْمِ الْمَنَامِ

    Kingship lies there, not in what you left behind;

For this world is nothing but a dream in sleep.

Your Highness is gladdened by what you sent ahead there:

Acts of devotion beneath the wing of darkness,

And your spanning the darkness of nights with prayer,

And your passing the noonday heat in fasting,

And your generous giving for jihad of every precious piece

Of pure gold, and every goblet.

And your alms prove your promise true, raising

Your station among the noble stations.

O 'Abd al-'Aziz, patience is hard for me

In mourning you, for it is difficult to attain.

Yet some of my anguish is eased,

And my sorrow, by the endurance of your glory.

Your lucky stars live on after your death,

Though you were made to drink the cups of death.

And over your house lies God's veil,

Spread amply like the covering on the Sacred House.

And your heir, so dear to you, is a king,

Mighty in command, his sword held in dread.

    يُطَاوِعُهُ الزَّمَانُ بِلاَ زِمَامِ

    Sa'id—'fortunate'—so rejoice in name and meaning;

Time obeys him without a rein.

And your house is where lucky stars revolve,

And your household is in harmony and order.

Though in him you left a crescent of kingship,

And after your sun had set, we went into darkness,

Yet behold him, waxing every day,

Resembling the form of the perfect full moon.

You sincerely entrusted his care to men,

Noble men whose practice is honoring bonds of loyalty.

Abu Yahya—what a man of modesty,

Faithful to his pledges in full!

He defends him with bright, keen swords,

And guards the grazing herds with a vast army.

And whenever he sets out on an important undertaking

And presses on—blessed be such a valiant man!

Then 'Allal—what a treasure in your house!

He attends to its protection in the finest manner.

Then give thanks, O lord, for an endeavor

Free of reproach in its faithfulness.

And oh, how much loyalty you would have given thanks for,

And care, had you been able to speak!

Regular duties increase after your departure,

And care, in spear-fighting or at meals.

And preparation bearing blessings of bounty,

Whose clouds pour generously upon mankind.

The kings prepared him for their sons,

Through bonds of connection, knit in close union,

And showed a desire for him like one clinging

To a cord of affection and refuge.

And presented them to him with a happy outcome,

And gathering after separation, and reunion.

And whoever plants affection finds delight for his eyes,

And puts a hand of mastery to gathering its fruit.

So be at ease, and sleep in the shade of mercy,

Delighting in its coolness among the sleepers.

I have come to you with congratulations, a servant's congratulations,

A man of concern and care for your affairs,

Who wore your noble favor about his neck,

Lasting, like the neck-rings of doves.

He finds solace in greeting you, until

He sees you while you are in the Abode of Peace.
