بوَجْهِكَ في هَذِهِ المُدّةِ
And they said, “We marveled at the laughter of gray hair
They said, we are amazed at the laughter of old age
on your face in this span of time.
On your face at this time
تَكاثَرَhas multiplied شَيْبُكَyour gray hair منْfrom بَعْدِناafter us
تَكاثَرَ شَيْبُكَ منْ بَعْدِنا
فَهاso behold هُوَit يَضْحَكُlaughs فيin الشِّدّةِhardship
فَها هُوَ يَضْحَكُ في الشِّدّةِ
Your gray hair has multiplied since we left;
Your gray hair has increased after us
so behold, it laughs amid hardship.”
Yet here it is, laughing in adversity
