وَمَن حَمَلت ضِغناً عَلَىَّ أقَاربُه
With my family and wealth I would ransom the one to whom I have caused harm—
May my family and wealth ransom him to whom I brought harm,
the one whose kinsmen harbor rancor against me;
And him whose kinsmen have borne me a grudge;
وَمَنand the one هُوَhe أهوَىdearest كُلِّof all مَنwho وَطِىءَhave trodden الحَصىthe pebbles

the one dearest to me of all who tread the pebbled earth,
And him who, of all who have trodden the pebbles, is dearest
though she shuns me and treats me harshly;
To me—yet he shuns me and his manner grows harsh;

وَحارَبَني لَم أَدرِ كَيفَ أُحارِبُه
the one who, if enmity arose between us
And him who, if enmity arose between him and me,
and she fought me, I would not know how to fight her.
And he fought me, I would not know how to fight him.

Indeed, modesty holds me back, and I turn away,
And indeed modesty holds me back, and I turn away,
though I struggle with a passion keen as a sword’s edge,
With longing like a sword's edge, which I struggle to master,

بأمرٍ يَرَى الواشونَ أنّىَ جَالبُه
for fear that harm might befall her from her master
For fear she might suffer harm from her master
over something the tale-bearers think I have brought about.
Over a matter the talebearers think I have brought about.

إِذا خَانَنى وَالِيكِ وَازورَّ جانبُه
I return to press him for redress on whatever pretext
Why should I renew my demands upon him,
whenever your guardian fails me and turns his side away.
If your guardian betrays me and turns away?
