عَفا اللهُ عَن لَيلَى وَإِن سَفَكَت دَمِى

عَفا اللهُ عَن لَيلَى وَإِن سَفَكَت دَمِى

فَإِنِّى وَإِن لَم تَجزِنِى غيرُ عاتِبِ

فَإِنِّى وَإِن لَم تَجزِنِى غيرُ عاتِبِ

May God pardon Layla, even if she has shed my blood.

May God forgive Layla, even if she shed my blood

For even if she has not requited me, I am not reproachful

For even if she did not satisfy me, I have no complaint

عَلَيها ولا مُبدٍ لِلَيلَى شَكِيَّةً

عَلَيها ولا مُبدٍ لِلَيلَى شَكِيَّةً

وَقَد يَشتكِى المُشكَى إِلَى كُلِّ صَاحِبِ

وَقَد يَشتكِى المُشكَى إِلَى كُلِّ صَاحِبِ

toward her, nor do I voice a complaint to Layla;

Against Layla, nor any doubt about her

though the afflicted may complain to every friend.

And the one complained of may complain to every friend

يَقُولُونَ تُب مِن حُبِّ لَيلَى وَوُدِّها

يَقُولُونَ تُب مِن حُبِّ لَيلَى وَوُدِّها

وَما أَنا مِن حُبى لِلَيلَى بِتائِبِ

وَما أَنا مِن حُبى لِلَيلَى بِتائِبِ

They say, "Repent of your love for Layla and your affection for her."

They say: repent from loving Layla and loving her

But I do not repent of my love for Layla.

But I will not repent of my love for Layla
