مَلِلتُI grew weary بِصَنعاءَin Sana'a الأحاديثَthe conversations وَالمُنَىand hopes
وَأَبغَضتُand I hated قَصراًa palace فَوقَabove قصرٍa palace مُشَيَّدَاloftily built
In Sana'a I grew weary of talk and hopes,
I am weary of the endless chatter in Sanaa,
And I hated a lofty palace above another palace,
And I hate the palace towering high above all others.
وَأبغضتُand I hated أَصوَاتاُvoices بهاin it أَعجَمِيَّةًforeign
وَزُرقاًand blue-eyed men لراياتِfor the banners of الإِمارةِthe governing authority ذُوَّدَاdefenders
And I hated the foreign voices there,
I hate the strange unintelligible voices in it,
And blue-eyed men guarding the banners of authority,
And the blue flags of the Emirate raised aloft.
وَذاكَand that one الَّذِىwho يَدعُوcalls for بلَيلٍat night صَباحَهُhis dawn
كَفَىsuffices بالهُمُومِwith the cares الطّارقاتِthat come by night مُسَهّدَاkeeping one sleepless
And that one who calls for his dawn at night—
And the one who calls out in the night for his morning,
The cares that come by night suffice to keep me sleepless.
The worries knocking are bed enough for him.
فيارَبَّso, O Lord أَدعوكَI call upon You العَشِيَّةَthis evening مُخلِصاًsincere
إِلَيكَto You مُنيباًturning back in devotion تَائِباًrepentant مُتَعَبِّدَاworshipping devoutly
So, O Lord, I call upon You this evening in sincerity,
So O Lord I call on you in the evening sincerely,
Turning to You, repentant and devoted in worship,
Turning to you in repentance, humble and devout.
لتَغفِرَso that You may forgive ليme إنif كُنتُI was أَسرَفتُI transgressed أَوor رَمَىhurled
بيَme الجَهلُignorance مَرمىًa goal غَيرُهُan alternative to it كانَwas أَرشَدَاwiser
That You may forgive me if I have transgressed, or been hurled
Forgive me if I have gone too far or if in ignorance,
By ignorance toward a goal when another would have been wiser.
I was led astray, when another path would have been wiser.
