أَبِيتُI spend the night خَمِيصَhollow البَطنِthe belly غَرثَانَfamished جائِعاًhungry
وأُوثرُand I favor بِالزّادِwith provisions الرَّفِيقَthe companion علىover نَفسِىmyself
I spend the night hollow-bellied, famished and hungry,
and favor my companion over myself with provisions.
وأُفرِشُهُand I spread for him فَرشِىmy bedding وأَفتَرِشُand I take as my bed الثَّرَىthe earth
وأَجعَلُand I make مَسَّthe touch of الأَرضِthe earth مِنin دُونِهِhis stead لَبسِىmy clothing
And I spread my bedding for him and take the earth for my bed,
and make the earth's touch my garment in his stead,
حِذارَfor fear of أَحاديثِthe talk of المَحافلِgatherings فىin غَدٍtomorrow
إِذاwhen ضَمَّنِىclasps me يَوماًone day إِلَىto صَدرِهِits breast رَمسِىmy grave
for fear of tomorrow's talk in gatherings,
when one day my grave clasps me to its breast.
