وَجَدتُI felt بهاfor her وَجدَanguish المُضِلِّone who has lost بَعِيرَهُhis camel
بمَكَةَat Mecca وَالحُجّاجُand the pilgrims غادٍgoing in the morning ورَائحُand going in the evening
For her I felt the anguish of one who has lost his camel
I found in her the passion of one who's lost his camel,
At Mecca, while the pilgrims come and go.
In Mecca while the pilgrims are departing around him.
وَجَدتُI felt بهاfor her مَاwhat لَمdid not تَجِدfeel أُمُّthe mother of وَاحِدٍan only child
بِوَاحدِهاfor her only child تُطوَىare laid عليهِover him الصَّفائحُthe stone slabs
For her I felt what the mother of an only child has not felt
I found in her what no devoted mother ever found
For her only child, over whom the stone slabs are laid.
In her only son, over whom pages are folded.
وَجَدتُI felt بهاfor her ماwhat لَمdid not يَجِدfeel ذُوone with حَرارَةٍburning thirst
يُرَاقِبُhe watches جُمّاتِaccumulations of water الرَّكِيِّthe wells النَّزَائحِdepleted
For her I felt what one burning with thirst has not felt,
I found in her what one with great ardour never found
Watching the water gather in depleted wells.
As he watches the throngs circling the holy shrine.
أَبَيتِyou refused بِأَلاby not تَرثَئىyou have pity ليfor me فكيفَso how ليfor me
بأَنto تَنظُرِىyou look بَينَbetween الحَشاthe innards وَالجَوانِحِand the ribs
You refuse to pity me; how, then, can I
You refused to eulogize me, so how can I bear
Get you to look between my innards and ribs,
For you to look between the tents and the songbirds?
فَتُخبِرَكِso they tell you العَينَانِthe two eyes عَنabout قَلبيَmy heart الَّذِىwhich
مَلِلتُI have grown weary بهbecause of it لاnot كالقُلوبِlike the hearts الصَّحائحِsound
So that your two eyes may tell you of my heart, which
So that your eyes may tell you about my weary heart,
Has left me weary, unlike hearts that are sound.
Bored with it, not like hearts that are blithe and joyous.
