You revived me through nearness to you and reunion,

You have revived me with your nearness and meeting

After my death from deadly separation.

After my death from the distance of the killer

يا من هواه وحبه ووداده

يا من هواه وحبه ووداده

سكن السويدا من فؤادي الداخل

سكن السويدا من فؤادي الداخل

O you for whom passion, love, and affection

O you whose love, affection and intimacy

Have settled in the dark core of my inner heart.

Settled in the core of my heart

أنت المراد وأنت غاية مطلبي

أنت المراد وأنت غاية مطلبي

من كل عال في الوجود وسافل

من كل عال في الوجود وسافل

You are my desire, and you are my quest's ultimate goal,

You are the sought, and the goal of my request

Among all that is high and low in existence.

From every high and low in existence

راحت بروحي صبوة وصبابة

راحت بروحي صبوة وصبابة

بجمالك الفرد البديع الكامل

بجمالك الفرد البديع الكامل

Infatuation and yearning carried away my soul

My youth and adolescence went away

Through your peerless, wondrous, perfect beauty.

With your unique, flawless beauty

فغدوت ما بين الأنام مدلها

فغدوت ما بين الأنام مدلها

ومولها في حال صب ذاهل

ومولها في حال صب ذاهل

So I became, among humankind, bewildered with love,

So I became, among people, infatuated

And enraptured, in a dazed lover's state.

And bewildered in a state of swooning

ذهبت به السكرات من خمر الهنا

ذهبت به السكرات من خمر الهنا

والأنس لا من كاس خمر الباطل

والأنس لا من كاس خمر الباطل

Intoxicating raptures carried him away, from the wine of bliss

The intoxications took me away from the wine of bliss

And intimacy—not from a cup of falsehood's wine.

And companionship, not from a cup of false wine

فتراه فان عن عوالم حسه

فتراه فان عن عوالم حسه

لا يستفيق لقول ضد عاذل

لا يستفيق لقول ضد عاذل

So you see him effaced from the realms of his senses,

You see him unconscious of his senses

Not waking at the words of a reproaching foe.

Not awakening to the word of a forsaker

فاشرب شراب العارفين الأوليا

فاشرب شراب العارفين الأوليا

الجامعين لكل وصف فاضل

الجامعين لكل وصف فاضل

So drink the draught of the mystic knowers, the saints,

So drink the drink of the gnostics and saints

Who embody every virtuous quality.

Who combine every noble characteristic

واخضع لساقيهم وقطب مدارهم

واخضع لساقيهم وقطب مدارهم

وإمام سالك سبلهم والواصل

وإمام سالك سبلهم والواصل

And submit to their cupbearer and the axis of their orbit,

And submit to their cupbearer and the axis of their orbit

And the guide of those who tread their paths and those who arrive.

And the leader traversing their paths, the connector

غوت البرية كلها ومغيثها

غوت البرية كلها ومغيثها

عن إذن سيده الكريم العادل

عن إذن سيده الكريم العادل

The succor of all creation and its rescuer [probable reading],

He is the savior of the whole wilderness and its aid

By permission of his generous, just Lord.

By permission of his generous, just Master

إن شئت تعرفه وتعلم وصفه

إن شئت تعرفه وتعلم وصفه

بطريقة الأجمال فاسمع سائلي

بطريقة الأجمال فاسمع سائلي

If you wish to know him and learn his qualities,

If you want to know him and learn his attributes

In brief, then listen, you who question me:

In the way of metaphors, then listen, my questioner

هو سيد متواضع متخشع

هو سيد متواضع متخشع

ورع تقي زاهد في العاجل

ورع تقي زاهد في العاجل

He is a master, humble and reverent,

He is a humble, reverent master

Scrupulously pious, God-fearing, detached from this fleeting world.

Pious, devout, ascetic in this fleeting world

الشرع سيرته الحقيقة حاله

الشرع سيرته الحقيقة حاله

ومن العبودة بالمقام الحافل

ومن العبودة بالمقام الحافل

Sacred law is his way; spiritual reality is his state,

The Law is his conduct, the Truth is his state

And in servanthood he holds a richly endowed station.

And from servitude, with an exalted station

بر رحيم بالخلائق كلهم ير

بر رحيم بالخلائق كلهم ير

عى الوجود بعين لطف شامل

عى الوجود بعين لطف شامل

Kind and merciful to all creatures, he watches

Kind and merciful to all creatures

Over existence with an eye of all-embracing kindness.

Seeing existence with a gaze of inclusive kindness

يمتد من بحر البحور محيطها

يمتد من بحر البحور محيطها

خير الأنام بعاجل وبآجل

خير الأنام بعاجل وبآجل

He draws sustenance from the sea of seas, their encompassing ocean:

His ocean extends from the Ocean of Oceans

The best of creation, in this life and the next.

The best of people, in this life and the next

صلى عليه اللَه ما هب الصبا

صلى عليه اللَه ما هب الصبا

أو سار حاد قصده برواحل

أو سار حاد قصده برواحل

May God bless him as long as the east wind blows,

May Allah bless him whenever the breeze blew

Or a chanting camel-driver journeys toward him with riding camels.

Or a traveller journeyed, seeking him as destination
