yet she, young man, is not al-ʿAmiriyyah.

But she is not, O youth, in Alameria

فأصبوا ثم أصبوا ثم أصبو

ولا كالصبوات العذريه

ولا كالصبوات العذريه

So I yearn, then yearn, then yearn,

So they cried and cried and cried

but not like the longings of ʿUdhri lovers.

And not like the chaste cries

وليست للغواني والأغاني

وليست للغواني والأغاني

ولا للشهوات الدنيويه

ولا للشهوات الدنيويه

Nor are my longings for fair women and songs,

And they are not for the loves and songs

nor for worldly desires,

Nor for the worldly passions

ولا للغانيات بأي معنى

ولا للغانيات بأي معنى

ولكن للأمور العلويه

ولكن للأمور العلويه

nor for beauties in any sense,

Nor for the singers in any sense

but for heavenly matters:

But for the supreme matters

حقائق بل رقائق قد تسامت

بأوج الحضرات القدسيه

realities—rather, subtleties—that have soared

Truths, nay subtleties, that have transcended

to the zenith of the sacred presences;

To the highest of the holy presences

مناظر للنواظر من قلوب

مطهرة زكيات نقيه

مطهرة زكيات نقيه

visions for the eyes of hearts,

Visions for the sights from hearts

purified, unsullied, and pure,

Purified, righteous, immaculate

وأرواح تطير إلى علاها

وأرواح تطير إلى علاها

بأجنحة الغرام المقعديه

بأجنحة الغرام المقعديه

and spirits that fly to their heights

And spirits flying to their heights

on the immobilizing wings of love,

With the wings of seated passion

فتسرع في رياض من جنان

وتأوي للقناديل المضيه

then hasten through meadows of heavenly gardens

So they hurry in gardens of paradise

and take shelter in the shining lamps.

And take refuge in the shining lanterns

فواشوق الفؤاد لخير عيش

مع الأحباب في الغرف العليه

مع الأحباب في الغرف العليه

And oh, how the heart longs for the finest life

So the heart's fervor for the best life

with loved ones in the lofty chambers!

With the loved ones in the highest chambers

عسى الرب الكريم بمحض فضل
