O traveler, if you come to the valley of al-Munhana,

Set down your load there, and alight at the treasure of wealth.

And tend the reins for neighbors who have settled there,

And seek a heart lost in that courtyard.

And convey greetings to its people from me, and describe

The wasting sickness that befell me after separation.

And implore the beloved ones to show compassion,

For they themselves are people of noble deeds and praise.

And ask them, by God, not to sever

The bond of the love-stricken lover, even if he has sinned.

Say: O noble ones of the clan, might there be a visit,

Or a return to an ailing exile, already bowed?

This estrangement has left nothing remaining of him

Except skin over bone that gazes.

O Arabs of Najd, how long will you prolong coldness

Toward a love-stricken man whose ribs are filled with anguish?

Infatuated with you and passionately loving your beauty,

And seeking union with you, the utmost wish.

Indeed, I pity whoever is worn down by separation from you,

Like me, and envy the good fortune of whoever has drawn near to you.

And I regard life, when it lacks union with you:

Indeed, death and annihilation are more pleasing than it.

Who is there for me, and may I see you, my masters,

As a favor? Otherwise, who would I be, and who am I?

You are my desire; I care not, once

You are pleased with me, who loves me and who hates me.

Through love of you hearts live, and love of you

Is the light of inmost selves, the best thing one can possess.

And through nearness to you and union with you, blissful are the

Souls in the garden of joy and happiness.

In the seat of truth, where have shone forth

Its lights in the Presence—oh, what radiance!

And the God-fearing are its men and those present there.

O Lord, join us to them, O our Lord!
