O splendor of beauty, shall I see you?

And is there a way to meet you?

Through distance and estrangement, you have torn

My heart; there is no movement left in me.

Among humankind, I have become one yearning

For you; I have only what is other than you.

And at times the enemies sought

To repel me and turn me from your love.

But they could not—how could I ever

Turn from you and from your sanctuary?

Ah, may God curse every reproacher—

My reproachers over you, who have not known you.

And had he seen your cherished face,

And the radiance of yours that envelops it,

    And tasted from a mouth’s sweet-flowing spring,

And inhaled the perfume of your fragrance,

He would become, like me, bound to longing,

Like a wind of love over your courtyard.

And he would be one of mine, upon my path,

And they would wrestle with me for your love.

And now, O goal of all desires,

This weeping is no feigned weeping.

With it, the water of every eye flows,

As though a torrent from your coldness,

And from my standing over ruins

Whose outlines have faded within your sanctuary.

Over my isolation, over my solitude,

    Apart from a company singled out by your choice;

Over my exile, over my anguish,

Over my being shunned within this snare.

    A captive with no ransom,

    And no way to release.

O delight of the eye, come to his rescue

Before he becomes entangled in destruction.

And revive one dead and decayed,

With a breeze of companionship from your night journey.
