O Saad, my heart is sad
O Saad, my heart is sad
At parting from the dwellings.
For the absence of meadows
قدindeed زادhas grown منهfrom it الحنينlonging
وساعدتهand aided it الدموعthe tears
Longing has grown because of it,
Longing has increased in it
And tears have aided it.
And tears have assisted it

بدمعهwith his tears والخشوعand humble reverence
I called out: is there any helper,
I called, is there anyone to help
With his tears and humble reverence,
With his tears and devotion?

Among all steadfast lovers
From every tormented lover
Whose yearning has long endured
Whose longing has been so long

For the little Arab band of the protected grounds,
To the Bedouin's ardour
Who dwell upon the sand dune?
Those who descend the dune
فيهمamong them عذيبsweet اللمىthe lips’ dusky hue

Among them is a sweet, dark-lipped one,
In them is the agony of passion
Peerless; the stranger’s beauty
He shot his heart with a painful arrow

قلبيmy heart بسهمwith an arrow مصيبunerring
Struck him when it struck
So it became like me, captive
My heart with an unerring arrow.
For ages feeling pain
فصارso he became مثليlike me رهينa captive
طولthroughout الزمانtime يلوعhe burns with longing
So he became, like me, a captive,
Poor thing, without rest
Burning with longing throughout time.
Nor peace for his heart

Poor soul, he finds no rest,
The night is like the day
Nor does his heart find calm.
And all time is agony
الليلthe night مثلlike النهارthe day
والوقتand time كلهall of it شجونsorrows
Night is like day,
The intention is to remove coyness
And every moment is sorrow.
For him, and to endure sorrows

And the aim is to cast off the bridle
And today is like years
In his presence, and set all cares aside.
And the lute like crowds

And a day is like years,
O is there for our days
And one is like multitudes.
With twists and turns

Oh, can our days
A return of our bliss
At the bend and the sand dune
So misery may disappear

Return with happiness,
And allow this passion
So that misery may cease
Through nearness, then meeting

Through nearness, then reunion?

I hope in the Strong, the Firm—
My Lord; to Him is the return.
