يا رب يا عالم الحال

إليك وجهت لآمال

O Lord, O Knower of every state,

O Lord, O Knower of my state,

To You I have directed my hopes.

فامنن علينا بالإقبال

فامنن علينا بالإقبال

وكن لنا وأصلح الحال

وكن لنا وأصلح الحال

Bestow upon us Your gracious favor,

So favor us with Your gracious attention,

Stand by us and set our state aright.

and be on our side, and set our state right.

يا رب يا رب الأرباب

يا رب يا رب الأرباب

عبدك فقيرك على الباب

عبدك فقيرك على الباب

O Lord, O Lord, Lord of lords,

O Lord, O Lord of lords,

Your servant, Your poor one, waits at the door.

Your servant, Your needy one, is at the door;

أتي وقد بت الأسباب

أتي وقد بت الأسباب

مستدركاً بعد ما مال

مستدركاً بعد ما مال

I have come, all means cut off,

he has come, with every means severed,

Making amends after I had strayed.

seeking to make amends after he strayed.

يا واسع الجود جودك

يا واسع الجود جودك

الخير خيرك وعندك

الخير خيرك وعندك

O You of boundless bounty—Your generosity

O You of boundless generosity, Your bounty I seek;

Is goodness itself; all good is Yours and rests with You,

goodness is Yours, and with You

فوق الذي رام عبدك

فوق الذي رام عبدك

فادرك برحمتك الحال

فادرك برحمتك الحال

Beyond all that Your servant ever sought.

is more than Your servant sought.

Then overtake my state with Your mercy.

So remedy this plight through Your mercy.

يا موجد الخلق طرا

يا موجد الخلق طرا

وموسع الكل برا

وموسع الكل برا

O Creator of all creation,

O You who brought all creation into being,

And dispenser of goodness to all,

and who lavish goodness upon all,

أسألك اُسبال ستر

أسألك اُسبال ستر

على القبائح والأخطال

على القبائح والأخطال

I ask You to draw down a veil

I ask You to let a veil descend

Over vile deeds and errors.

over shameful deeds and follies.

يا من يرى سر قلبي

يا من يرى سر قلبي

حسبي أطلاعك حسبي

حسبي أطلاعك حسبي

O You who see my heart's secret,

O You who see the secret of my heart,

Your knowing is enough for me, enough.

Your awareness is enough for me—enough for me.

فامح بعفوك ذنبي

فامح بعفوك ذنبي

وأصلح قصودي والأعمال

وأصلح قصودي والأعمال

Then efface my sin through Your pardon,

So erase my sin through Your pardon,

And set right my intentions and deeds.

رب عليك اعتمادي

رب عليك اعتمادي

كما إليك استنادي

كما إليك استنادي

Lord, upon You I rely,

Lord, upon You I rely,

As in You I seek support.

just as on You I lean,

صدقا وأقصى مرادي

صدقا وأقصى مرادي

رضاؤك الدائم الحال

رضاؤك الدائم الحال

In truth, my utmost desire

in truth; and my utmost desire

Is Your pleasure, everlasting.

is Your pleasure, ever constant.

رب يا رب إني

رب يا رب إني

أسألك العفو عني

أسألك العفو عني

Lord, O Lord, truly I

Lord, O Lord, I

Ask You to pardon me.

ask You to pardon me;

ولم يخب فيك ظني

ولم يخب فيك ظني

يا مالك الملك يا وال

يا مالك الملك يا وال

My hope in You has never failed.

and my hope in You has not been disappointed,

O Possessor of the Kingdom, O Guardian,

O Master of dominion, O Guardian.

أشكو إليك وأبكي

أشكو إليك وأبكي

من شؤم ظلمي وإفكي

من شؤم ظلمي وإفكي

To You I complain and weep

I complain to You and weep

Of the evil of my injustice and falsehood,

over the ill effects of my wrongdoing and falsehood,

وسوء فعلي وتركي

وسوء فعلي وتركي

وشهوة القيل والقال

وشهوة القيل والقال

Of the wrong I do and leave undone,

and the evil of my deeds and omissions,

Of my craving for idle talk and gossip,

and my craving for idle gossip,

وحب دنيا ذميمه

وحب دنيا ذميمه

من كل خير عقيمه

من كل خير عقيمه

And love of this blameworthy world,

and love of a blameworthy world,

Barren of every good.

barren of every good,

فيها البلايا مقيمه

فيها البلايا مقيمه

وحشوها آفات وأشغال

وحشوها آفات وأشغال

Afflictions abide within it,

where afflictions dwell,

And its very stuff is scourges and distractions.

and whose contents are scourges and distractions.

يا ويح نفسي الغويه

يا ويح نفسي الغويه

من السبيل السويه

من السبيل السويه

Alas for my wayward soul,

Alas for my soul, gone astray

From the straight and even path:

from the straight path!

أضحت تروح عليه

أضحت تروح عليه

وقصدها الجاه والمال

وقصدها الجاه والمال

It now goes to and fro upon it,

It now goes against it,

While its aim is prestige and wealth.

and its aim is status and wealth.

يا رب قد غلبتني

يا رب قد غلبتني

وبالأمان سبتني

وبالأمان سبتني

Lord, it has overpowered me,

O Lord, it has overcome me,

And enthralled me with a sense of safety,

and with a sense of security it has taken me captive,

وفي الحظوظ كبتني

وفي الحظوظ كبتني

وقيدتني بالَاُكبال

وقيدتني بالَاُكبال

And abased me amid selfish desires,

and amid pleasures it has cast me down,

And bound me in fetters.

and fettered me with shackles.

قد اشتعنتك ربي

قد اشتعنتك ربي

على مداواة قلبي

على مداواة قلبي

I have sought Your help, my Lord,

I have sought Your aid, my Lord,

To heal my heart

in healing my heart,

وحل عقد كربي

وحل عقد كربي

فانظر إلى الغم ينجال

فانظر إلى الغم ينجال

And untie the knot of my anguish.

and untying the knots of my anguish.

Look upon me—and grief will clear away.

So look upon the sorrow, and it will lift.

يا رب يا خير كافي

يا رب يا خير كافي

احلل علينا العوافي

احلل علينا العوافي

O Lord, O best of all who suffice,

O Lord, O best of those who suffice,

Let well-being descend upon us.

send well-being down upon us;

فليس شيء ثم خافي

فليس شيء ثم خافي

عليك تفصيل وإجمال

عليك تفصيل وإجمال

For nothing there is hidden

for nothing there is hidden

From You, in detail or in sum.

from You, in detail or as a whole.

يا رب عبدك ببابك

يا رب عبدك ببابك

يخشي أليم عذابك

يخشي أليم عذابك

O Lord, Your servant stands at Your door,

O Lord, Your servant is at Your door;

Fearing Your painful punishment,

he fears Your grievous punishment

ويرتجي لثوابك

ويرتجي لثوابك

وغيث رحمتك هطال

وغيث رحمتك هطال

And hoping for Your reward,

and hopes for Your reward,

While the rain of Your mercy pours down.

and the rain of Your mercy pours abundantly.

وقد أتاك بعذره

وقد أتاك بعذره

وانكساره وفقره

وانكساره وفقره

He has come to You bearing his excuse,

And he has come to You with his excuse,

His brokenness and poverty.

and his brokenness and poverty;

فاهزم بيسرك عسره

فاهزم بيسرك عسره

بمحض جودك والأفضال

بمحض جودك والأفضال

So rout his hardship with Your ease,

so vanquish his hardship with Your ease,

Through Your sheer generosity and grace.

through Your pure bounty and favors.

وامنن عليك بتوبه

وامنن عليك بتوبه

تغسله من كل حوبه

تغسله من كل حوبه

And favor him with repentance

And bestow repentance upon You [apparently intended: 'upon him'],

That washes him of every sin.

that washes him clean of every sin,

واعصمه من شر أو به

واعصمه من شر أو به

لكل ما عنه قد حال

لكل ما عنه قد حال

Protect him from the evil of returning

and guard him from the evil of his return [reading the apparently split word as 'his return'],

To all that he has left behind.

to all that he has turned away from.

فأنت مولى الموالي

فأنت مولى الموالي

المنفرد بالكمال

المنفرد بالكمال

For You are the Master of all masters,

For You are the Master of masters,

Alone in perfection,

alone in perfection,

وبالعلى والتعالي

وبالعلى والتعالي

علوت عن ضرب الأمثال

علوت عن ضرب الأمثال

In loftiness and transcendence.

and in loftiness and transcendence;

You are exalted beyond all likeness and comparison.

You are exalted beyond all comparison.

جودك وفضلك يرجى

جودك وفضلك يرجى

وبطشك وقهرك يخشى

وبطشك وقهرك يخشى

Your generosity and favor are hoped for,

Your bounty and grace are hoped for,

And Your might and overwhelming power are feared.

and Your fierce might and subduing power are feared;

وذكرك وشكرك لازم

وذكرك وشكرك لازم

وحمدك والإجلال

وحمدك والإجلال

To remember and thank You is a duty,

and remembering and thanking You are duties,

As are praising and revering You.

as are praise of You and reverence.

يا رب أنت نصيري

يا رب أنت نصيري

فلقني كل خير

فلقني كل خير

O Lord, You are my champion.

O Lord, You are my helper;

Bring me every good,

so teach me every good,

واجعل جنانك مصيري

واجعل جنانك مصيري

واختم بالإيمان الآجال

واختم بالإيمان الآجال

And make the Gardens my destination,

and make Your gardens my destination,

And seal the appointed ends with faith.

and seal life's endings with faith.

وصل في كل حالة

وصل في كل حالة

علي مزيل الضلالة

علي مزيل الضلالة

And send blessings in every state

And send blessings in every state

Upon the dispeller of error,

upon the dispeller of error,

من كلمته الغزاله

من كلمته الغزاله

Him whom the gazelle addressed—

the one to whom the gazelle spoke:

Muhammad, guide and director.

Muhammad, the guide who shows the way.

والحمد لله شكراً

والحمد لله شكراً

على نعم منه تتري

على نعم منه تتري

And praise be to God, in gratitude,

And praise be to God, in gratitude

For blessings from Him that follow one upon another.

for blessings from Him that come in succession.

نحمده سراً وجهراً

نحمده سراً وجهراً

وبالغدو والآصال

وبالغدو والآصال

We praise Him in secret and openly,

We praise Him in secret and openly,

At morn and in the evenings.

and at daybreak and in the late afternoons.
