    O friend, my heart has found neither solace nor ease,

    Since it left the dwellings of loved ones,

    And settled among desert dwellers and strangers,

    Far from its intimates and companions.

    May God preserve the times of union, O friend,

    The days when we lived in joy and rejoicing,

    Serving draughts of repose in cups of bliss,

    Without fearing pain or toil.

    فالشوق قد قطع نياط قلبي

    O Sa'd, lead me toward my beloved's dwelling,

    For longing has severed my heartstrings;

    For nothing cools the heat of my anguish's fire

    Except my settling among those tent ropes.

    إنه مصيبة دونها المصايب

    God is my protector from the coldness of loved ones;

    Indeed, it is a calamity beside which other calamities pale.

    So, do you think our drinking springs will run clear,

    After such long separation and exile?

    I hope in my God, possessor of generosity and favors,

    That He unveil to my heart the radiance of spiritual states,

    With what He bestowed on their Pegs and the Substitutes,

    And their misguidance [wording unclear], their Solitaries, and the Poles.

    ومطلبي من جملة العباد

    Those people are the ones I seek,

    And my quest among all the servants;

    أهل المعارف والصاف والآداب

    And love for them has settled in my heart:

    People of spiritual knowledge, purity, and good conduct;

    الطيبون الطاهرون الأخيار

    The sincere, the truthful, the righteous;

    The good, the pure, the virtuous;

    الكل منهم مخبت وأواب

    The knowers, those who taste, the free;

    Each of them humbly submits and ever turns back to God.

    O God, with a mote of love for God,

    Efface me through it from everything other than God,

    And leave me no desire thereafter but God,

    The One, the Worshipped, the path of lords [wording unclear].

    So today I hope for no relief from anguish,

    Unless love's drinking spring runs clear for me,

    And I attain my Lord's approval and nearness,

    Within which lies the severing of all ties,

    والغيب عندي صار كالشهاده

    Upon the carpet of knowledge and worship;

    And the unseen has become for me as the seen.

    This, by my life, is the height of happiness.

    Glory be to my Lord! Whoever hopes in Him is not disappointed.

    O seeker of realization, rise and hasten!

    And rise upon the leg of lofty aspirations, and dare!

    واصدق ولا تبرح ملازم الباب

    And be patient in suppressing passion, and persevere;

    And be sincere; never cease keeping to the door.

    And know that goodness, all of it without exception,

    Lies in your following the Prophet, whose intercession is accepted.

    May God bless him as long as there gleams

    A dawn, and as long as the ravines' torrents flow.
