If you wish to live happily throughout your life,

and be placed after death in the garden of the grave,

and be raised, when the Trumpet is blown, safe

from fear, threats, expulsion, and loss,

and be presented exalted, honored, and revered,

while the angels give you glad tidings of triumph and reward,

and have your deeds weigh heavier at the weighing—those

in which you rejoice at the place of gathering and resurrection,

and pass along the surface of the Sirat like a lightning flash,

and drink from the pool of the pure, chosen Prophet,

and dwell forever in bliss in the highest Gardens,

favored with nearness to the One, the Unique, the Peerless,

and behold Him with the eye, though He is transcendent

beyond place, assigned modality, limits, and confinement:

you must strengthen your certainty, for

when it is perfected, the unseen becomes directly visible, beyond denial.

And be Ash'ari in belief, for it

is the clear wellspring, free from deviation and unbelief.

And the spiritual pole, the imam, our refuge, has indeed formulated

his creed, which is the cure for harm.

And I mean him whose title no other bears:

'Proof of Islam'—what an honor for you!

    فَبالعِلمش تَسمو في الحَياةِ وَفي الحَشرِ

    And take an abundant share of religious knowledge;

for through knowledge you rise in life and at the gathering.

And persevere in studying the Qur'an, for in

its recitation lie the elixir and relief for the breast.

Surely it is the all-encompassing ocean, and other

books are rivers drawing their supply from the sea.

    تَفوزُ مِنَ الأَسرارِ بِالكَنزِ وَالذُخرِ

    Ponder its meanings and recite it measuredly, in humility;

you will gain a treasure and a store of secrets.

And be fearful at the threat of punishment, and eager

when you recite the promise [reading uncertain], with utmost gladness,

keeping far from what is forbidden and shunning it,

keen to fulfill what is commanded, in hardship and ease.

And if you wish to obtain an illuminated heart,

pure of all else, then devote yourself to remembrance [reading uncertain].

And persevere in it in darkness and in light,

and in every state, with the tongue and the inward self.

For if you keep to it with focused attention,

a light will appear to you, unlike the sun and the full moon.

    أَتى ذِكرُهُ في سورَةِ النورِ فَاِستَقرِ

    Rather, it is a light coming from God;

it is mentioned in Surah al-Nur, so read closely.

And cleanse your inward self of impurities, for it,

when pure, grants you a kind of contemplation,

through which you roam the unseen realms of all the worlds,

and through it you travel in the night's darkness as it journeys on.

And through diligence and beautiful patience you dwell in

the spacious heights; so hold fast to diligence and patience.

And be grateful to God, in heart and body,

for His bounty; indeed, increase comes with gratitude.

Trust in your Lord and be content with His decree,

and be sincere toward God, in secret and openly,

content with what He has given you, finding sufficiency in it,

praising Him in both ease and hardship.

And generously give of your surplus, and do not fear

privation from God, nor dread poverty.

And beware of this world, for its grandeur entails

a reckoning, while its forbidden things tear away the veil.

And do not be a faultfinder or an envier,

    nor be deceitful or treacherous.

And never seek prestige, my friend; it is

alluring, yet hides poison where you do not suspect.

And beware of greedy desires, for their companion

is abased, base in purpose, and low in standing.

And if you seek something, ask God, for He

is the Benefactor, the Bestower of goodness and abundance.

And I counsel you to keep the five prayers, which, my brother, are

the pillar of God's religion and the heart of the matter.

And always maintain them in congregation,

and be constant in them at the night prayer and at the dawn prayer.

And rise in the night's darkness, devoutly obedient to God,

and pray to Him, ending your prayer with Witr.

And repent of every sin you have committed,

and seek forgiveness for wrongdoing at every moment.

May the Bestower, the generous Lord, through His grace,

freely forgive the sins of wrongdoers.

For His kindness embraces all creation, and His generosity

flows over every being, along with His bounty.

And invoke blessings upon the best of all creation,

Muhammad, sent to leave no excuse and to give warnings,

the Prophet of guidance, whose rank God has exalted,

and whom He strengthened with triumph from Himself and with support.

Upon him be God's blessing, and then His peace,

blessings and salutations until the end of time,

together with his family and companions, as long as the east wind blows,

and the camel-driver chants and the turtledove sings.
