I pour forth my tears; the tears upon my cheek

bear witness to yearnings, sorrow, and love's anguish.

I feel anguish and melancholy in my heart

because of the desolation of distance and rejection that has befallen me.

Whenever I seek to draw near to Najd, there crowd

upon me matters that require distance from Najd,

and from the neighbors of the encampment, whose love has settled in

my heart, distracting me from past and future.

Loving them is my faith, my duty, and my practice,

and my firmest handhold, and the best of what I possess.

And in their nearness lie my solace, my soul, and my rest,

and I am nothing if they test me with separation.

And whenever a breeze wafts to me from their abodes,

mingled with the scent of balsam and bay laurel

and the fragrance of lavender and arak, it stirs within me

my sorrows, leaving me unable to utter a word.

What recourse have I? Life has passed, and I have not attained

a meeting with them; once life is gone, it cannot be brought back.

I find no sweetness in living far from them,

even if dominion over the earth lay in the grasp of my hand.

And I surely hope for nearness to them and union with them,

however long the days, so long as I have not reached my grave.

So, O Sa'd, take me toward them, and be sure to tell them

that I remain committed to preserving affection and the pledge.

And tell them of my burning anguish and yearning,

and how I conceal love's secrets with all my strength.

And I dwell in places of estrangement,

despite the many companions, apart and alone.

Near yet far, as though I did not exist,

alone and solitary on my path and in my purpose.

Affairs and circumstances arise, and I have not found

a helper in facing them; they hold a solitary person back.

So be my intercessor with them; perhaps they

will graciously grant reunion, despite the distance.

If only I knew: shall I visit their tents

just before dawn, still true to affection and the pledge?

And will the days bring me together with them?

And after this separation, O Sa'd, is there anything that can help?

I cherish hope, and think well of my Creator,

exalted is He, great in bounty, deserving praise:

God of all creation and its Sovereign,

exalted above any likeness, equal, or rival.
