1. أنا مشغول بليلي

    عن جميع الكون جمله

    I am absorbed in Layla,

    To the exclusion of all creation.

  2. فإذا ما قيل من ذا

    قل هو الصب الموله

    And when it is asked, 'Who is this?'

    Say, 'He is the lovesick, bewildered lover.'

  3. أخذته الراح حتى

    لم تبق فيه فضله

    The wine seized him, until

    Not a remnant remained within him.

  4. راح أنس راح قدس

    ليست اراح المضله

    Wine of intimacy, wine of holiness—

    Not the wine that leads astray.

  5. نسمات القرب هبت

    من ربوع العامرية

    The breezes of nearness blew

    From the abodes of al-ʿAmiriyya.

  6. أطربت روحي وسري

    حين أهدت لي التحية

    They enraptured my soul and my innermost being

    When they offered me a greeting.

  7. وسرت في الكون منها

    نفحات عنبرية

    And from her, through creation, spread

    Wafts scented with ambergris.

  8. فار وعني من حديثي

    إن تكن يا سعد أهله

    So relate from me something of my discourse,

    If you are worthy of it, O Saʿd.

  9. إنه سر شريف

    ليس للأغيار يذكر

    Indeed, it is a noble secret,

    Not spoken of to outsiders.

  10. إنه معنى لطيف

    عن جميع الناس يستر

    Indeed, it is a subtle meaning,

    Concealed from all people,

  11. غير عن عبد تقي

    صوفي صافي محرر

    Except a devout servant:

    A Sufi, pure and liberated,

  12. ذي شريقة وحيقيقة

    جمع الفرع وأصله

    Possessing sacred law and spiritual truth,

    Who has united the branch with its root.

  13. أين أرباب المثاني

    والعلوم اللدنيه

    Where are the masters of the oft-repeated verses

    And of divinely bestowed knowledge?

  14. أين أصحاب المعاني

    والنفوس العلويه

    Where are the possessors of meanings

    And exalted souls?

  15. أنا أدعو من دعاني

    هكذا حكم القضيه

    I call whoever calls me;

    Such is the ruling in this matter:

  16. في خصوص لأعموم

    علة من بعد نهله

    For a select few, not for all—

    A second draught after his first.
