And many an ordeal and affliction I endured,

Until God brought us relief and victory.

I bore it patiently until its time had passed—

The time appointed for it in prior knowledge and the record.

And had I hastened to meet it as it ended,

With what the soul demands in the 'garb of ten' [unclear in Arabic],

Of blameworthy impatience, grief, and sorrow,

I would have added harm to my harm.

And a person's impatience in a time of affliction

Is only present weariness that takes away the reward.

When God tests you, patience is His due

From you; and if He favors you, your duty is gratitude.

And whoever knows this world is certain that it

Is, beyond doubt, the abode of misery and evil.

So a person must, throughout his life,

And as long as he remains in it, hold fast to patience.

So blessed is a servant who has shunned its pleasures,

And preferred a home whose goodness flows forever.

It is the everlasting Garden, whose hospitality is delightful

For people who obeyed God in secret and in public.

God's noble men, who held fast to Him,

And to the radiant Sunnah and the shining stars,

Guides of humankind—blessed is a servant who has seen them

And sat with them, even once in his lifetime.
