فَلا خُطْبةٌ مِما أُجيدُ ولا الشعْرُ
Verse and prose have disowned me—alas for me!
He disowned me, while poetry and prose came easily to him
So neither oratory nor poetry is among the things I do well.
Neither speeches that I excel at, nor poetry comes to me
وأَيْأَسَنيand made me despair مِنْof ذاthis وذاكَand that تَبَلُّديmy dull-wittedness
وأَيْأَسَني مِنْ ذا وذاكَ تَبَلُّدي
وَماand no لامرِئfor a person ذنْبٌblame إذاwhen وَضَحbecomes clear العُذْرُthe excuse
وَما لامرِئ ذنْبٌ إذا وَضَح العُذْرُ
And my dull-wittedness has made me despair of this and that.
Both despair me, my sluggishness to blame
And a person bears no blame when the excuse is clear.
No man bears guilt when the excuse is clear
