    Sides have drawn away from their beds,

    warding off through repentance whatever befalls.

    And eyes have awakened for God's sake, weeping

    over their sins, when all stirring has ceased.

    Slumber woos them, but they turn away from it,

    as sorrows have shunned relief,

    joining a flow of tears to a torrent,

    as a lavishly pouring raincloud greeted you.

    لَهُم أَبَداً عَلَى الحُسْنَى دؤُوبُ

    Behold, the noble are people of devotion;

    they are ever tireless in pursuing goodness.

    Love for you brings nearness to the All-Merciful,

    and love for anyone besides you is sin and guilt.

    And were they not mountains among us,

    sins would have swept away the earth and humankind.

    كَذا سِيمَا المُحِبِّينَ الشُّحوبُ

    They bear the marks of their pallor;

    thus, pallor is the lovers' mark.

    فَقَدْ جَعَلَتْ جَوَانِحُهمْ تَذُوبُ

    They fear an assault by night, though they have frightened no one;

    for their ribs have begun to melt.

    They were summoned to devotions by night,

    so their hearts are filled with scars from them.

    And their characters have grown pure and clear,

    so no blemishes have clung to their honor.

    It is as though, through what is imparted to them,

    the unseen unveils its secrets to them.
