يَاO رَبَّةَmistress of المُقَلِthe eyes المِرَاضlanguishing فُتُورُهاtheir languor
أعدَىmore harmful عَلَيَّto me مِنَthan الحِمامِdeath القَاطِعِlife-severing
O mistress of languishing eyes, their languor
Is deadlier to me than death that cuts life short.
كَمْhow many a لَيلَةٍnight لَيْلاءَpitch-dark لَوif أُعطَىI were granted المُنَىwishes
فِيهَاwithin it تَجَلَّتْcleared عَنto reveal سَنَاكِyour radiance السَّاطِعِdazzling
How many a pitch-dark night—were I granted my wishes
Within it—would clear to reveal your dazzling radiance!
لَوْif كُنْتyou were مُنْصِفَةًfair لَمَاwould not have جَازَيْتِنِيyou repaid me
وأنَاwhile I am المُطيعُobedient جَزاءthe recompense of غَيْرone who is not الطَّائِعِobedient
Had you been fair, you would not have treated me,
Obedient as I am, as one who disobeys.
قَلْبِيmy heart لَدَيْكwith you وفِيand in يَديْكyour hands فإِنso if يَضعْit is lost
فَعَلَيْكِthen against you أرْجعُI shall seek redress بالْفُؤَادِfor the heart الضّائِعِlost
My heart is with you and in your hands; if it is lost,
Then I shall hold you answerable for the lost heart.
