O gazelle of a palace, for whom I pine,

Dawn is dark until you appear.

    لا غَرْوَ أنْ يُلْزَمَ الغَرِيمُ

    She departed by night, yet my passion has not yet departed;

No wonder the debtor is held fast.

Ah, how lovely that fertile dwelling!

A hostile abode swept it away.

Hopes were sweet throughout its precincts,

As though it were the Corner and the Hatim,

When we were all together in its shade,

And the garden of our hopes was dear.

And, by love's decree, I had a kinsman,

As though, in tenderness, he were a breeze.

So today no lofty, spacious dwelling

Is visited, nor any compassionate companion.
