O delight of the eye, the eye loves you.

For it finds peace in nothing but the sight of you.

Wondrous, by God, are my two eyes; nothing now stirs their longing

but your radiance and the sweetness of your abode.

The sun has been shamed by the fact that it sets,

while, since you rose, your face has never set.

Do not appear before me in jewelry and fine robes,

for beauty has clothed you in its embroidery and adorned you.

O you who occupy my eye when I fear no parting from you,

and occupy my heart when I have no hope of meeting you.

The vine's intoxicating heat cannot make me drunk,

for I have already collapsed, drunk on your intoxicating heat.

    فَطَابَقَ اسمُكِ يا حَسْنَا مُسَمَّاكِ

    You were named for beauty, since you were specially endowed with it;

so your name, O Hasna, fits its bearer.

May God call none to account but whoever rebukes me

unjustly for loving you, while he himself loves you.

I fear you when you are angry, as I hope for you when you are pleased.

How often I place my hopes in you, O you there, and fear you!

    يا سُوءَ ما كَلَّفت عَينَيَّ عَيْنَاكِ

    I weep in sorrow for your parting if sleep will not come;

how cruel the burden your eyes have laid on mine!

How strange is time, hoping to make me forget

my love for you, in its ignorance! No, by God, I shall not forget you.

And how could I forget bygone times in the protected grounds?

I have no patience when I remember them and you.

And how many nights we spent in Kazima,

in whispered talk and complaint of what your love-wasted one endures.

I hid your night journey on those nights, fearing a reproachful woman,

and a reproachful man; but musk revealed your night journey.

The sash sang upon your waist in rapture,

on those nights; then your two anklets listened to what troubled you.

And I remained chaste despite my longing, as proved by what

you freely offered; yet I did not offer your mouth to my desire.

Ah, for a love-maddened man who faces ravening lions

on the day of combat, yet falters when he meets you!

Fully armed, yet he complains of a veiled woman,

unarmed! Marvel at an armed man who has become a complainer.
