My sorrows have overcome me because you are far away.

And sleep has shunned my eyelids since your departure.

And a burning anguish flared between my ribs.

Even the flood could not quench it.

How could patience draw near me after such anguish,

when I am far from family and homelands?

Had Thahlan borne some of what

I was made to bear, Thahlan's summits would have fallen.

Captivity and coercion—neither can be endured—

and exile from my family and my home.

All this—and how much sorrow amid it

has put consolation to shame, and how much passion and humiliation!

Yet all that is slight beside separation and its taste.

Indeed, separation is the second death.
