    Is there no reconciliation after the ʿĀmirī woman's reproach?

    She has cut off even the maidservants and the letters.

    When I visit her, I meet barriers of spears,

    and gleaming blades guard the face-veils and curtains.

    So I retrace my steps; yet, if I wished, I would be borne

    to her tent by my steed, through the lean horses at her side.

    And that is not cowardice, but modesty and chastity,

    before the clan, lest they learn whose love has wasted me.

    God bless her! Why has she begrudged me union with her,

    and why denied me nearness, short of kinship's heights?

    And what harm has it done her that I am Yemeni, while she

    is of Qays? Do we not recognize one another as Arabs?

    فيا مَن رأى عضْب الظبا يحرُسُ العَذبا

    She guards her cool, sweet mouth with her glance;

    so who has ever seen a keen-edged sword guarding sweetness?

    فيا فَاتِني بالحُسْنِ حسّنْ ليّ العُقبى

    Estrangement and aversion have beset me in turn;

    so, you who bewitch me with beauty, make my outcome fair.

    If making me happy is repugnant to Suʿdā,

    then what effect might [unclear] have on me?

    And God bless the wearer of bracelet and anklet! Whenever

    I try to win her favor, she appears before me angry.
