Is it the heir apparent, or the guardian's pledge,

that has come to water the earth like an onrushing flood?

And is his radiant brow what has appeared

to us, or the brow of the shining dawn?

Lo, the secret of guidance is manifest in him,

for one foremost in providential favor from the outset.

There is all you love of pleasing character,

and all you love of radiant form.

Upon his gifts hopes are built,

as verse is built upon its rhyme consonant.

He shone forth in generosity and brilliance,

with the full moon's light amid a rain cloud's bounty.

And he sought the summits of the imamate, approaching a lord

able to fill the earth with justice.

He chose him as a bulwark for the kingdom when

he revealed him as the noblest man of ardent pride.

And he saw him wholly devoted to divinely granted success,

hitting the mark whenever he draws to shoot.

He did not favor him with appointment to command; rather,

the exalted command itself has claimed him.

He followed the path that high distinction required for him,

through his office and his illustrious lineage.

And Truth sounded its summons for a noble-spirited man

    who embodied Yahya's perfection.

    سَمِيُّ أَبِيهِ يَا لَكَ مِنْ سَمِيِّ

    His innate virtues trace him to al-Faruq;

    his father's namesake—what a namesake he is!

Enough for you are the counsels that guided him,

from al-Mahdi, of the house of al-Wasi.

Radiant, he occupies a station in the caliphate

where he dwells at ease in eminence and ascent.

He warded off what assailed monotheism, becoming

unique among kings, without an equal.

One whose father is Abu Hafs could never

be found other than a towering, unbowed man.

Those once ahead fell behind when he raced

from the heights toward the farthest goal.

And the nights shone with his adornments,

appearing like wives arrayed in jewels.

Blessed in birth, auspicious in endeavor,

supported in resolve, without a peer.

    زَكَاةُ الفَرْعِ لِلأَصْلِ الزَّكِيِّ

    The goodness of his stock is nothing strange;

the branch's excellence is owed to its excellent root.

The arrows of anyone who shelters with him prevail,

so the feathered shaft and the bare shaft are alike.

An appointment renewed the gladness of the days,

for a peerless man of peerless stock.

Through you the night shone with radiance and fragrance,

and evening's yellow dye came from the roses of forenoon.

Outcomes of fresh splendor, from premises

    gilded by his magnificent appearance.

You would imagine the earth filled with gardens,

from the fresh blossoms in which it has wrapped itself.

And when he campaigns, you would reckon it seas

surging with horses and riding camels.

The wide land is cramped by their hill-like masses,

of A'waj steeds or humped Arhabi camels.

The life of faith and worldly life lies in the two hands

of Abu Yahya, the lion, the noble lord.

both readied for enemy and ally.

like Khuzaym's, and generosity like Khazim's.

Do his sword-edges recoil from Sadwikish,

when prodigious cleaving is their habit?

When, already unsheathed, they fasten upon a tribe

that rushed toward its bloody place of death.

Slaves whom their masters' forbearance deceived

thus exposed glad tidings to tidings of death.

    وَزَأْرُ الليْثِ لَيْسَ مِنَ الصَّبِيِّ

    In error they sought what they had turned away from;

    and a lion's roar is no child's.

    فَهَلْ وَجَدَتْ عَن السَّنَنِ السَّوِيِّ

    They sought refuge in the heights, sheltering there;

but did they find escape from the straight course?

Nor did they abandon recklessness in their misery,

on account of the destruction of wretched Ibn Ishaq.

He provoked war age after age,

roasting before its fiercely kindled blaze.

And its finest, in beginning and end,

clothed him in mail rather than Athami fabric.

Laughing, while the keen sword weeps

gore at the breaking of the hardened spear.

And fate had kept hidden for him, from that man,

a youth who met him with doom ripe for harvest.

Ibn Ghaniya availed him not a whit,

nor did his kinsmen, the sons of Ali, help.

The decrees of the nights run their course

over the fainthearted and the bold alike.

If battle had been his allotted drink,

the tips of the shafts have driven him away.

And if misfortune had granted him a reprieve,

then good fortune had not forgotten him.

And how did Ibn Sawwaq hope for escape,

when he could not escape what beset him?

When shattering lays the branches low,

what turns it aside from breaking the young palms?

He was surrounded and submitted in humiliation,

condemning the outcome of that pestilent pasture.

And he pressed for safe-conduct, guided

    toward saving his wayward people.

It mattered little to him that his strength had weakened,

so he might grasp the strong cord from him.

He regained his senses, though he had not sobered for an instant,

trusting, as his fancy led him, in the lookout.

    وَكَمْ نَطِفٍ لهُ فَلَجُ البَرِيِّ

    And favor granted him what he had never imagined;

how many a guilty man wins an innocent man's vindication!

But for pardon, they would have made him drink death—

India's broad blades, on a cruel day.

When death surrounds one resolved to die,

let him not despair of hidden grace.

Lo, a fervent supplicant, obedient to God,

    who subdues every rebellious tyrant.

He rose through the ascending ranks of virtue until

he surpassed the righteous, God-fearing man in his adornments.

And he swore that he would be seen only devoted

to kindness toward the man who does wrong.

Neither maturity nor completeness was lacking

in his mind, even in his boyhood years.

War's lookout, he rendered it ample service,

and the nose-ring spared him the need for a lookout.

An inclination toward tall spears is evident in him,

if you watch him with a furtive glance.

And he seeks flirtation with keen blades,

reddened like the curved limbs of bows.

He never for a moment ceases acquiring knowledge,

and here he is, sated and quenched by it.

He rose toward glory through toil and striking sparks,

with a readily kindling firestick drawn from his genius.

And in lofty qualities and meanings he secured

    their inheritance from worthy forebears.

He received them by right, keen-witted,

discerning, from a discerning, keen-witted man.

He ennobles whatever his two palms wield,

so the pen has the pride of the Mashrafi sword.

His rule is for us both succor and rain,

surpassing the first seasonal rain and its successor.

And his dwelling in the royal abode is a triumph,

with serene living and an untroubled mind.

So approach the sea of bounty, sweet and fresh,

and behold the assembly's full moon, rising high.

    فَهَلْ لِلْحُرِّ مَعْذِرَةُ الوَفِيِّ

    I have fulfilled all the praise I could;

will the noble man excuse one who has been faithful?

And I hope he will grant me acceptance,

with which I offer this panegyric like a sacrificial offering.
