إِنindeed سَعِيدَSaʿīd بنَson of حَكَمْḤakam
إِن سَعِيدَ بنَ حَكَمْ
صِنوُthe twin of العُلَىeminence نَجْلُthe son of الكَرَمْgenerosity
صِنوُ العُلَى نَجْلُ الكَرَمْ
Indeed, Saʿīd ibn Ḥakam
Is eminence’s twin, generosity’s son.
رِئَاسَةٌleadership بِمِثْلِهاwith its like
رِئَاسَةٌ بِمِثْلِها
يُفاخِرُvies in glory with السيْفَthe sword القَلَمْthe pen
يُفاخِرُ السيْفَ القَلَمْ
His is a leadership whose like
Lets the pen rival the sword in glory,
وَسُؤْدَدٌand nobility مَجمُوعَةٌgathered together
وَسُؤْدَدٌ مَجمُوعَةٌ
فيهِin him مَحَاسِنُthe finest qualities of الشِّيَمْcharacter
فيهِ مَحَاسِنُ الشِّيَمْ
And nobility; gathered together
In him are the finest qualities of character.
مُعتَمدٌa trusted man مِنamong شَأْنِهِhis ways
مُعتَمدٌ مِن شَأْنِهِ
رَعيُobservance of العُهُودِthe pledges وَالذِّمَمْand the covenants
رَعيُ العُهُودِ وَالذِّمَمْ
He is a trusted man whose way is
To honor pledges and covenants.
فَأَنحَنِيso I bow مُمَهِّداreadying
فَأَنحَنِي مُمَهِّدا
إِلَىtoward جَوابِهِanswering him القَلَمْthe pen
إِلَى جَوابِهِ القَلَمْ
So I bow, readying
The pen to answer him.
عادَةُthe custom of نَدْبٍa gallant man أَرْوَعٍsplendid
عادَةُ نَدْبٍ أَرْوَعٍ
خَصَّhe singled some out بِبرَّهِwith his kindness وَعَمْand embraced all
خَصَّ بِبرَّهِ وَعَمْ
Such is the way of a splendid, gallant man:
He singled some out with his kindness, yet embraced all.
فَتَنزهso he stays above reproach فِيin كُلِّevery حاcondi-
فَتَنزه فِي كُلِّ حا
لٍ-tion وَمَآلٍand outcome مُلْتَزِمْsteadfast
لٍ وَمَآلٍ مُلْتَزِمْ
Thus he stays above reproach in every condi-
tion and outcome, steadfast.
حَيَّاmay greet الحَيَاthe rain حَضْرَتَهhis court
حَيَّا الحَيَا حَضْرَتَه
وَجَادَهَاand water it abundantly ثَرُّcopious الدِّيَمْsteady rains
وَجَادَهَا ثَرُّ الدِّيَمْ
May the rain greet his court,
And copious, steady rains drench it.
