I marvel at one who seeks soft bedding, living in luxury,

though his morning journey takes him to the grave, laid upon the bier.

Safety from the abode of ruin—

while its speckled serpent is deadly in its bite.

And if the deluded man pondered death's fierce assault,

he would restrain a hand accustomed to aggression and violence.

Take heed: turn away from a minor sin that drags a greater one behind it,

for rain's full downpour begins with a sprinkling.

Devote yourself to striving well in every good deed,

and shun blameworthy pursuits and the stirring of strife.

And if you fear bearing sins on the morrow,

then do not strive to acquire beasts of burden and small livestock.

I see every tyrant toppled, and his throne

toppled; yet the face of your Lord, Possessor of the Throne, remains.
