عِندِيwith me نِزاعٌyearning ليسَthere is no عَنْهُfrom it نُزُوعُturning away
لِلْبَدْرِfor the full moon حَجْبٌveiling لَيْسَthere is no مِنْهُfrom it طُلوعُrising
I have a yearning from which there is no turning away.
I have a strife from which there is no retreat
The full moon is veiled, with no rising from that veil.
The moon has a veil from which there is no rising
عَجَباًhow strange! تَقَضَّىended بالخُسوفِin eclipse سُطوعُهُhis radiance
ولِصِنْوِهِand for his twin عَقِبَafter الخُسوفِthe eclipse سُطوعُradiance
How strange! His radiance ended in eclipse,
How strange that its brightness was eclipsed
yet his twin shines after the eclipse.
And its beauty returned after the eclipse
أوَand? لَيْسَis not عُلْوِيُّheavenly الصِّفاتِin qualities حَقيقَةًin truth
غَيْرَwithout الْتِفاتٍa glance راعَstruck awe وَهْوَwhile he مَروعُterror-stricken
And was he not truly heavenly in his qualities?
Or is the Most High not truly characterized
Without a glance, he struck awe, though himself stricken with fear.
By anything other than care for one distressed?
سُرْعانَhow swiftly ماthat فَجَعَbereaved الزّمانُtime بِغَصْبِهِby seizing him
وَالدَّهْرُand fate بالعِلْقِof the treasure النَّفيسِprecious فَجوعُever bereaving
How swiftly time brought bereavement by seizing him,
Soon time wrongfully robbed me of him
and fate is ever bereaving us of precious treasure.
And fate ravenously deprived me of that precious comrade
وَطَوىand folded away مَعَاهِدَthe haunts ذِكْرِهِof his remembrance وعُهُودِهِand his former days
حَتَّىuntil كأَنَّهُas though it مَاnot وَفَىhad run its course الأُسْبُوعُthe week
And it folded away the haunts of his remembrance and his former days,
It folded up the scrolls of his mention and covenants
until it seemed not even a week had run its course.
As if it never kept its promise in the week
يَاah لَيْتَهُwould that it لَوif only دامَcontinued يُمْتِعُنِيgives me delight بِهِin him
أَبَداًforever شُرُوقٌrising لِلضُّحَىof the forenoon ومُتُوعُand ascent
Ah, if only it had continued to give me joy in him—
O would that he had continued to delight me with himself
forever—the morning light's rising and ascent!
Forever risings for the bright dawn and gifts shared
لَهْفِيmy sorrow عَلَيهِfor him مُوَدّعاًbid farewell لاnot يُقْتَضَىcan be expected
لِذِهابِهِfor his departure حَتَّىuntil الحِسابthe Reckoning رُجُوعُreturn
Alas for him, bid farewell; no one can expect
My craving for him bidding farewell cannot be appeased
a return from his departure until the Reckoning.
Even by reckoning his return until the final judgment
كَمْhow often دَافَعَdefended الجَيْشُthe army العَرَمْرَمُvast دُونَهُin his defense
لَوْif only أَنَّthat شَيْئاًanything لِلْحِمامِagainst death دَفوعُable to repel
How often the vast army fought in his defense,
How many an impenetrable army did he hold back from him
if only anything could ward off death!
If something for the doves could be warded off
لِلْقَلبِfor the heart حَالُthe plight الشَّمْلِof the gathering يَوْمَon the day نَعِيِّهِof his death announcement
كُلٌّeach علَىunder حُكمِthe decree الرَّدَىof death مَصْدُوعُshattered
The heart shared the gathering's plight on the day his death was announced:
For the heart the state of being torn on the day of his death notice
each was shattered under death's decree.
Each is in the grip of destruction, split open
إنْif تَخْلُare empty مِنْهُof him مَنَازِلٌdwellings وَمَطَالِعٌand horizons
لَمْnot تَخْلُare empty مِنْهُof him جَوَانِحٌbosoms وضُلوعُand ribs
Though dwellings and horizons are empty of him,
If places and risings are devoid of him
bosoms and ribs are not empty of him.
Breasts and ribs are not devoid of him
بِأَبِيmy father be ransom مَحَاسِنَهhis charms التِيwhich وُصِلَwas joined الثَّرَىthe earth
مِنْهاof them بِماwith what أَنَاI دونَهُapart from it مَقْطُوعُcut off
My father be ransom for his charms; the earth has been granted
By his beauty with which he joined the earth
a share of them from which I am cut off.
With some of which I am less endowed
لَوif رُمْتُI sought أَنْto أَنْساهُforget him هَاجَstirred تَذَكُّرِيmy remembrance
بَرْقٌlightning لَمُوعٌflashing أَوْor أَغَنُّa mellow-voiced bird سَجوعُcooing
Were I to try to forget him, my remembrance would be stirred
If I tried to forget him, my recollection
by flashing lightning or a mellow-voiced, cooing bird.
Would stir like a flaming blaze or copious downpour
وَكَفَىand suffices شَهِيداًas a witness بِالْهَوَادَةِto tenderness والهَوَىand love
أَنَّthat المُباحَwhat is permitted مِنof الكَرَىsleep مَمْنوعُis denied
And it is witness enough to tenderness and love
It suffices as a witness to gentleness and love
that permitted sleep is denied me.
That the forbidden of disasters is prevented
لَنwill not يَبْرَحَleave السُّهْدُsleeplessness المُبَرِّحُtormenting مُقْلَتِيmy eye
ماwhile دَامَcontinues يُطْبِقُcloses مُقْلَتَيهِhis two eyes هُجُوعُslumber
Tormenting sleeplessness will never leave my eye
The friendly assembly will not cease to cheer my eyes
as long as slumber keeps his two eyes closed.
As long as shutting brings them together in seclusion
فيهِover him تَهَاجَرَتِhave parted الحَشَايَاthe mattresses والحَشَاand the breast
وتَوَاصَلَand have joined البُرْكَانُthe chests واليَنْبُوعُand the wellspring
Over him, bedding and the breast have parted,
In it prairies and meadows reconciled
and the chests and the wellspring have joined.
And springs and volcanoes connected
لاneither فِطْرَFitr لاnor أَضْحَىAdha يُؤَنِّسُbrings cheer قُرْبَهُits approach
ولَهُand for him نُزوحٌremoteness مُوحِشٌdesolate وَشُسوعُand great distance
Neither Fitr nor Adha brings cheer as it draws near,
No feast or celebration makes his proximity joyous
while his departure is desolate and his remoteness vast.
And his absence is lonely and dismal
لَمْnot أَشْهَدِI attended الأَعْيادَthe festivals مَسْروراًrejoicing بِهاin them
لَكِنْbut مَخافَةfor fear أنْthat يُقَالَit be said جَزوعُunable to bear grief
I did not attend the festivals rejoicing in them,
I did not happily attend celebrations
but for fear of being called unable to bear grief.
But fearing it might be said I was disconsolate
حجِّيmy pilgrimage لأَجْدَاثٍto graves أَطَابَhe perfumed تُرَابَهَاtheir soil
بِشَذىًwith fragrance كَمَاas هَبَّblew النَّسِيمُthe breeze يَضُوعُwafts fragrance
My pilgrimage is to graves whose soil he perfumed
Make pilgrimage to fresh graves, the soil of which
with a fragrance that wafts as the breeze blows.
The breeze perfumed as it freely blew
مِنهاfrom them أهِلُّI raise the pilgrim's cry لِماfor what أُفيضُI pour forth وإنَّماand only
لِبْسِيmy garb هُناكَthere كآبَةٌsorrow وَولُوعُand ardent attachment
From them I raise the pilgrim's cry for my outpouring; and only
For them I profess what I pour out, but in fact
sorrow and ardent attachment are my garb there.
My being there is gloom and anguish
والهَدْيُand the sacrificial offering فيin تِلكَthose المَشَاعِرِsacred sites قُدِّسَتْmay they be hallowed
قَلْبٌa heart جُذاذٌin fragments والجِمَارُand the stoning-pebbles دُمُوعُtears
And the offering at those sacred sites—may they be hallowed—
And the gift in those sacred places
is a heart in fragments, and the stoning-pebbles are tears.
Is a barren heart, and the tears, a downpour
هُوَit مَاwhat عَهدْتَyou have known فَلاso do not تَدِنْmake a creed بِمَلامَتِيof blaming me
وَجْدِيmy anguish بِفَرْطِwith the excess of صَبَابَتِيmy ardent longing مَشْفُوعُcoupled
It is as you have known it; do not make blaming me your creed.
He is as you knew him, so do not blame me
My anguish is coupled with my overwhelming longing.
And consider my abundant youthful folly an intercession
وَحَدِيثُand the report سُلْوانِيof my finding solace مَتَىwhenever أُسْمِعتَهُyou are made to hear it
فَاحْكُمْthen judge عَلَيْهِupon it بأَنَّهُthat it is مَوْضُوعُfabricated
And any report of my finding solace, whenever you are told it,
And when you hear my dreamy discourse
judge it to be fabricated.
Judge it as fabricated
