لأمر اللّه في الأعضاد فتّ

لأمر اللّه في الأعضاد فتّ

وعاقبة اللصوق البحت بتّ

وعاقبة اللصوق البحت بتّ

God's decree saps the strength of arms,

God's command in the joints has loosened

And sheer attachment ends in severance.

And the sequel of clingers is separation

ومجتعات هذا الخلق شتّى

ومجتعات هذا الخلق شتّى

ولكن بعدها لا شكّ شتّ

ولكن بعدها لا شكّ شتّ

And the gatherings of this creation are diverse,

And the gatherings of these people are diverse

Yet after them, without doubt, comes dispersal.

But after them undoubtedly separation

وهل أبصرت ذا ورقٍ نضير

وهل أبصرت ذا ورقٍ نضير

من الأغصان لم يمسسه حتّ

من الأغصان لم يمسسه حتّ

And have you seen one bearing fresh leaves

And have you seen paper like leaves

Among the branches, untouched by leaf-shedding?

Untouched by any fold

تأهّب للنوى وأعدّ زاداً

تأهّب للنوى وأعدّ زاداً

فأسبابُ المتالف لا تكَتّ

فأسبابُ المتالف لا تكَتّ

Prepare for departure and make ready provisions,

Prepare for purpose and make provisions

For the causes of death cannot be counted.

For causes of accord do not persist

وقدما باد حارثة وزيدٌ

وقدما باد حارثة وزيدٌ

وخبّابٌ تقدّمهُ الأرت

وخبّابٌ تقدّمهُ الأرت

And long ago Haritha and Zayd perished,

Qadma perished, and so did Haritha and Zayd

And Khabbab—al-Aratt had preceded him.

And Khallab preceded by fate

عجبت لكل من يسهو ويلهو

عجبت لكل من يسهو ويلهو

وبين يديه أخذٌ ثمّ غتّ

وبين يديه أخذٌ ثمّ غتّ

I marvel at everyone who is heedless and makes merry,

I'm amazed by those who are heedless and play

While before him lie seizure, then crushing.

With taking, then loss, right before them
