Glad tidings to the western delegation, the choicest of Arabs:

an arrival in eager hope, bringing refuge from terror.

And bending down the boughs of their hopes brought them

varied showers of generosity, with ease and abundance.

Did you not see them reach the giver of overflowing bounty,

who greeted them with ample gifts and welcome?

And when he clothed them, he girded them with swords; you see

only keen blades adorned with gold over patterned robes.

The minds of the Ma‘qilians are bewildered at gifts,

drawing from whose ample bounty spared them roaming after rain clouds.

By their lives, had they ever won the like of these before,

when livelihood roamed between dry dates and camel calves?

And more precious than these is the guidance they received,

though the gifts grew to outnumber grains of dust.

Has not the great calamity cleared? Has not the rupture healed?

Praise God for a people who met a rift with mending!

    فكعْبُهم يَعلو رُؤوسَ بني كَعْبِ

    Sincerity brought them near, though their dwelling was far away;

so their heel rises above the heads of the sons of Ka‘b.

They are the caravan: distress turned aside from them as they turned aside

from racing in haste and trotting in guile.

    تَدور رحاهُم مِن هِلالٍ على قُطْبِ

    Full moons—whenever the sky frowns, they shine;

their mill turns upon a pivot from Hilal.

Their devoted return attests the sincerity of their turning back,

and their resolve proclaims that sword-edges will drive back the foe.

Good fortune led them to the guiding imam,

leading them to the herds and flocks he bestows.

And it teaches them that daylight is not like pitch darkness,

nor sleek coursers like exhausted, mangy beasts.

And whoever seeks Yahya as a Kaaba for his circling

comes to fear no oppression, upon the summit of the hills.

An imam of guidance, he destroyed misguidance, unleashing

keen swords against it with the swiftest cutting strokes.

And a sea of bounty—whoever hopes for its surging flood

shall win cast pure gold and poured silver.

    صَنائعُه وهي الجسامُ إلى ربِّ

    He surpassed kings in blessed beneficence;

his favors, immense as they are, are directed to the Lord.

And he sent horses racing in pursuit of foes,

his banner of guidance passing from him to a valiant king,

who composes polished books or leads battalions.

A scholar who ventures into war is enough for you!

For how many a scholar and marked warrior has his eminence felled,

with a kind of silencing rebuke like thrusts and blows!

His asceticism and piety are given over to sobbing,

while his thirsty sword drinks again and gulps deeply.

Has not his support of a formidable man awed the East,

who struck in the West with point and edge unblunted?

He supplants destitution and poverty with wealth,

and brings relief from distress with a mighty charge.

And he grants safety to one whom his state of drought compels

to wander blindly through far lands, from fear of calamity.

Religion, through his authority, found refuge with one who confronts

its foe, a fierce defender even at the cost of blood.

He straightened its leaning the day he rose to its defense,

bringing death to enemies at dawn, amid the noblest companions.

to illustrious lineage, cry of him, ‘He is enough for me!’

His blades are stained from his breaking the enemy's thorn,

as though he longed for breaking and staining.

Embrace the caliph's example, laying up in advance

through it acts of devotion, to win nearness to God.
