Glad tidings: the morning of success unveils

the face of pardon and the lowering of the wing.

Bounty has heralded the attainment of wishes,

and toil has proclaimed the winning of the lot-drawing arrows.

This is the opening of the fast, welcomed

after a closing and an opening marked by favor.

    Indeed, the guiding, chosen imam

has affirmed through kindness the conditions of generosity.

His traits are gentle and fragrant, as when

the blowing winds stir the fragrant herbs.

And gracious leniency is followed by bounty:

for this, openness; for that, ample scope.

Were Time fashioned after his forbearance,

it would not sweep souls away.

Pardon a sinner, O Imam of truth,

whose ambition for the utmost goals went too far.

His chastisement has tamed him by reining him in,

and he did not deliberately flaunt his defiance.

    وفي قَبُولِ التّوبِ رَفْعُ الجُناح

    He sinned, but repented at once;

    and accepting repentance removes guilt.

Enough for me as an intercessor with you for my lapse:

love, sincere counsel, and unalloyed praise.

Longing has tormented me for a court

from which the fortunate never depart.

I imagined drawing near to it, yet

the fates bore me no fruit but distance.

May you ever—lapses being the way of mortals—

be stirred to pardon as sword blades quiver.
