أجَارَgranted protection مِنَfrom الخَطْبِcalamity الأميرُthe emir مُحَمّدُMuhammad
فَقُمْتso I rose بِماfor what أوْلاهُhe bestowed it أُثْنيI praise وأحْمَدُand I give thanks
Emir Muhammad protected me from calamity.
The prince Muhammad granted my request
So I rose to praise and give thanks for what he bestowed.
So I praised him as I ought and lauded his excellence
ويَوْمَand on the day أتَتْنيcame to me بالبِشارَةِwith good tidings رُسْلُهhis messengers
سَجدْتُI prostrated وفيand upon التبشيرِannouncing good tidings للّهِto God يُسْجَدُone prostrates
And on the day his messengers brought me good tidings,
And when his messengers brought me the good tidings
I prostrated—and at good tidings, one prostrates to God.
I prostrated myself, for prostration itself is praise of Allah
وأَمَّلْتُand I hoped بالشكرِthrough gratitude المزيدَan increase منin الرِّضىfavor
وأَيّةُand what نُعْمَىblessing كالرِّضىlike favor تتزَيّدُkeeps increasing
And through gratitude I hoped for greater favor,
And I hoped for yet more satisfaction through gratitude
And what blessing increases as favor does?
For what blessing equals satisfaction that increases?
وظَائفَduties ماnot أهْمَلْتَyou neglected حيناًfor a moment أداءهاtheir fulfillment
وبعضُand some of شهودِيmy witnesses الأمسُyesterday واليَومand today والغَدُand tomorrow
Duties you never for a moment neglected to fulfill—
I have never neglected the duties you charged me with
And among my witnesses are yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Some of my witnesses being yesterday, today and tomorrow
هُمامٌa magnanimous man كَفانيshielded me from الحادِثاتِcalamities اعْتِبارُهُhis regard
وقَدْand already عنَّhad arisen ليbefore me مِنهاamong them مُقيمٌmaking one rise ومُقْعِدُand making one sit
A magnanimous man whose regard shielded me from calamities,
Concerns that sufficed me, lessons to be learned from events,
Though some had beset me, making me rise and sit in disquiet.
And for me they singled out both settler and nomad
فَلاso no مِنّةٌfavor إلاexcept لَهُhis فيin تخَلصيmy deliverance
بِيُمْنthrough the blessing of مَساعيهِhis efforts الكِرَامnoble ولاand no يَدُhelping hand
So I owe my deliverance to his favor alone,
So I owe no favor but to him for my deliverance
To the blessing of his noble efforts, and to no other helping hand.
Through the auspicious efforts of the generous, no other
ومَنْand whoever يَكُis فَرْعاًa branch للإمَامةِof the imamate والهُدَىand guidance
فإنَّthen indeed جَنَاهُhis fruit الغَضَّfresh مَجْدٌglory وسُؤْدَدُand eminence
And whoever is a branch of the imamate and guidance,
He who is a branch of the imamate and guidance
Then his fresh fruit is glory and eminence.
His shelter from harm is glory and happiness
رَآنيَhe saw me مرْدودَturned away from الشّرائعِthe watering places كُلّماwhenever
تَقَرّبْتُI drew near بالإخْلاصِwith sincerity أُقصَىI am thrust aside وأُبْعَدُand I am sent away
He saw me turned away from the watering places; whenever
I found the legal prescriptions repealed, every time
I drew near with sincerity, I was thrust aside and sent away.
I drew near in utter sincerity, farthest and nearest
نَصيبيmy share منof الآدابِliterature حِرْفَتُهاits ill fortune التيwhich
شَقِيتُI suffered بِهاthrough it جاراًas a neighbor لمَنْto one who بَاتَpassed the night يُسْعَدُis made happy
My share of letters was their ill fortune, through which
My share of the virtues is the profession of them
I suffered, a neighbor to one who passed the night in happiness.
That caused me to live alongside one who knew only good fortune
ولِلْحَظِّand fortune has لحْظٌa glance كَلَّgrew weary دُونَيshort of me خَاسِئاًrebuffed
كَأنيas though I were وإياهُand it شُعَاعٌa ray of light وأرْمَدُand a sore-eyed man
And fortune’s glance grew weary before reaching me, rebuffed,
And destiny has a destiny that has ever abandoned me
As though I were a ray of light, and it a sore-eyed man.
As if it and I were a beam of light and the blind
فَجمَّعَso he gathered مِنof شَمْليmy affairs وشَمْليwhile my affairs مُفَرَّقٌscattered
وَرفَّهand made ample منof شِربيmy share of water وشرْبيwhile my share of water مُصَرَّدُrationed
So he brought my affairs together, while my affairs lay scattered,
So he gathered what had scattered me and what I had scattered
And made my share of water ample, when my share was rationed.
And buttressed my drinking and my drinking that tottered
وصَرّحَand plainly declared بِالبُقياwith clemency ومازالَand he remained مُنْعِماًbestowing favors
لهhe has مَصْدَرٌa departure فيamid الصالِحاتِgood deeds ومَوْرِدُand an arrival
And plainly declared clemency, ever bestowing favors.
And he was open about granting me more and kept favoring me
His going out and coming in are amid good deeds.
For him are resources for good works and a spring
وكانَتand they were هوىًabysses ألقىcast إلَيهاinto them بِيَme الهَوىpassion
فَخلّصَنِيso he delivered me منهاfrom them مُعَاٌنaided مُؤَيَّدُsupported
And they were abysses into which passion had cast me,
And it had been a passion to which passion delivered me
So one aided and upheld delivered me from them.
But concepts supported by him saved me from it
تَشَفّعْتُI sought intercession فيهاconcerning them للإمامِwith the imam بِنَجْلِهthrough his son
ونِعْمَand excellent is شَفيعُthe intercessor for المذنبينَsinners مُحَمَّدُMuhammad
In this plight, I sought intercession with the imam through his son,
Through his son I implored the imam to intercede for me
And what an excellent intercessor for sinners is Muhammad!
And excellent is Muhammad as intercessor for sinners
