Do not turn away, for one may die of thirst—

    love-crazed, having never sought solace.

He made sleeplessness his slumber to please you,

and wore sickness as a cloak for love of you.

He tried to conceal his passion, and yet

found no escape from revealing its secret.

Whenever the east wind blew, he recalled longing,

so his eyes overflowed with yearning and ardor.

And when lightning flashed amid the rainclouds,

he matched them both in downpour and flame.

Oh, may God water the days of al-Rusafa,

like the east wind's breeze, gentle and dewy,

and gardens where I lose myself in longing,

though I was denied an endless stay within them—

with rain pouring like my tears the day I bade farewell

to its soil, wafting musk and dew.

Would that I knew: will time bring back a life

whose sweetness bears witness that it was honey,

and, for a garden, the expanse of a pool,

where you seek a haven for your desire?

Where we flirted with the tender narcissus's

    eyelids, and bent the myrtle's slender form;

and the gardens cooed courtesies to the eye,

as blossoms are arrayed in order,

beneath a night as beautiful as day,

    a radiance cut from the mold of youth;

and the Pleiades beside the full moon resembled

a palm gesturing to slap a cheek.
