بِعَيْشِكَby your life عَاطِنيoffer me أنباءَtidings دارِa dwelling
بِهاwith them أغْنَىI have no need عَنof القَدحِthe cup المُدارِpassed around
By your life, offer me tidings of a dwelling;
With your life, give me news of the abode
With them I have no need of the cup passed round.
With it I am richer than polished wine cups
إذَاwhen قَرُبتْit is near يَهيجُsurges لهاfor it اشتِياقيmy longing
وإنْand if نزَحتْit lies far away يُمَثِّلهاconjures it ادِّكارِيmy recollection
When it is near, my longing for it surges;
When it draws near, my yearning is stirred
And if it lies far away, my recollection conjures it.
And when it departs, my thoughts depict it
وَدَعْand cease لَوْميblaming me إِذاwhen أبصَرْتyou see ميليmy swaying
فَسُكرُfor the intoxication الشّوْقlonging مِنof the same kind as سُكْرِthe intoxication العُقارِwine
And cease blaming me when you see me sway,
Let me not be blamed if you see my inclination
For longing's intoxication is akin to that of wine.
For the intoxication of passion is like narcotics
فُطِرْتُI was born عَلىwith الحَنينyearning إلىfor المَغانيthe dwelling places
فقَلْبيso my heart فيin انصِداعٍfracturing وانْفِطارِand splitting
I was born with yearning for the dwelling places,
I was created inclined towards melodies
So my heart is cracking and splitting apart.
So my heart is in fracture and tearing
بَدَتْappeared أعلامُهاits landmarks فخَفِيتُso I faded from sight سُقماًfrom sickness
كأنيَas though I بعْضُone of أقْمارِmoons السِّرارِthe month's final moonless nights
Its landmarks appeared, so I faded from sight with sickness,
Its landmarks appeared so I fell ill
As though I were one of the moons at the month's dark end.
As if I am one of the orbiting planets
ونازَعَنيand contended with me for اصطبارِيَmy patience بَرْحُthe torment of وَجديmy longing
وأنَّىand how لِلْمُعنَّىfor the tormented one بِاصْطِبارِwith patience
And the torment of my longing strove to wrest my patience from me;
My patience battled my burning passion
And how can the tormented find patience?
How can the lover have patience?
