Suns unveiled by the intertwined stars,

And arak shoots whose gardens are canopied couches.

Charming maidens whom youth adorned with necklaces,

Whose jewels are what they reveal in smiling.

    يُضاهيه عَضْبٌ في يمينيَ باتك

    A lightning flash escorted my mounts through the darkness of night;

A keen, cleaving sword in my right hand matched it.

And the bright stars quivered, as though

Javelins among them were being shaken by the wind's hands.

And darkness let down a veil of gloom,

Which my sword or the lightning's radiance tore.

God be praised for the happy nights with Su'da!

They showed me the whiteness of union, though they were pitch-dark.

And God be praised for supple forms I clasped,

And their only fruit was rounded breasts.

The reproaching women chide me for it, in their folly,

To lead me along a path other than the one I follow.

No, by God's path, I will not heed

Reproach, nor will I leave love's path.

And he whose love for shy, wide-eyed maidens is true

Sees that whoever offers counsel speaks falsehood.

Am I to hold back my tears, not pour forth a raincloud,

While a languid-eyed one in jewels sheds blood?

And am I to curb my longing lest it melt my ribs,

While I have a master in al-Mālikiyya's eyelids?

And in the white pavilion is a slender-waisted woman,

    Like a dune-gazelle, full-bodied as a quivering sandhill.

Her front teeth are cool; the garden claims that it

Shares its daisies with her smiling mouth.

Her mounts journey on, yet as they journey,

They have resting places within the curves of my ribs.

Even if her two eyes have slain me, I may yet

Charge again, my resolve a slayer of calamities.

And the glances of graceful women are nothing but keen swords,

Nor are parting's wrenching pangs anything but battles.

I shall strike the entrails of darkness with firm resolve,

Even if mortal perils open wide their jaws at me.

And a man of resolve is most often found pressing on

When the only paths are deaths.
