Set the shoulders of evening and early-morning travelers swaying,

whether journeying through darkness or traveling at noon.

And cross the wilderness at the swift stride of every fleet she-camel,

reckless in her speed, crossing every desolate waste.

And when darkness thickens, take a cleaving sword as companion,

along whose flat the tears of jewels have flowed.

And if calamity befalls you, seek victory

through the vizier's exalted rank; you shall prevail over misfortunes.

An ocean of bounty, a beacon of guidance, the glory of his foes,

the axis of lordship and most radiant splendor.

Exalted, descended on his father's side from a mighty chief,

whose lineage and ancestral stock rise to lofty summits.

Radiant whenever his gray hair gleams,

    like lightning's flash within a rain-bearing cloud.

Through him the assemblies of bounty flourish in generosity,

through his largesse; without his hand they would not thrive.

And fragments of verse grow fragrant at his mention,

like a lump of ambergris in the censer of thought.

Nothing is more fragrant than the breeze of his praise,

save breathing in his perfumed character.

O you who forget me across the vast distance of separation,

I have not forgotten you, though you forgot to remember me.

Do you sleep, heedless of my hope, and leave me abandoned,

while fate eyes me with a hostile, sidelong glance?

Why did you not drive its vicissitudes from my courtyard,

and blunt the edge of calamities left unchecked?

Remember our affection, for sound judgment demands

that you not cloud its clarity with ill feeling.

Suppose you have laid up with me favors of your own:

do you think you bestowed them on one who gave no thanks?

May my fortune perish if my praises pass you by,

whether or not you show yourself through your favors.

No bonds of obligation fade with me, if you but knew,

nor are they cast aside, nor noble deeds disowned,

nor favors I have clothed through artistry

in ornate robes like the brocade of Abqar.

Come now, Abu Bakr—why do I not see

    those qualities, still unchanged?

Are you anything but the light of that radiant countenance,

or anything but a branch of that ancestral stock?

What ails me? I once knew good cheer as a figure inclined toward me,

yet today I know it as a phantom that comes upon me.

Do not, with the eminence you have acquired

and glory, efface affection's trace as written lines are erased.

And honor in me the bond of the grave

whose occupant lies in its depths, his deeds still unburied.

And here is a letter from me to you, which I have filled

with the perfume of a richly scented breeze of praise for you,

to rouse with it the noble, splendid man in you,

as an armored warrior shakes his brown-shafted spear in battle.

So stretch toward it, in a welcoming handclasp,

your sleeve, that every retreating fortune may come forward.

And grant me ample excuse for falling short, for never

have your virtues ceased to shame anyone who falls short.
