    O rider hastening on, convey

To Suʿda’s caravan a greeting from a yearning lover,

Possessed of wearying passion and tears stained red,

And melting vitals and a fluttering heart.

His eye has mingled pearls with carnelian

Since they made their mounts kneel at al-ʿAqiq,

And their camels departed bearing a beauty

From among the sand’s fair idols, lovely in the canopied litters.

Then, when you return, take him as a drinking companion,

With morning and evening draughts of talk of them.

Enough as perfume for one who inhales is the fragrance

Of them; and talk of them is pure wine enough for me.
