O lightning of Najd, have you noticed a man in Tihama

Who surrendered slumber to your smiling gleam?

No flash of yours appeared to him in the darkness

Without his saying to his eye's tears, 'Pour forth!'

I adjure you by God: water the sanctuary's hills

With clouds you embroider with al-Mirzam's rains.

And waft through Dhu Salam the breeze of its shade,

And when you pass by al-Aqiq, give greetings.

There I trailed the hems of youth's striped cloaks,

In willing obedience to it, defying the reproach of reproachers.

And indeed I visited the encampment in the dimness of night,

While night wore the guise of a jet-black steed.

Shouldering a curved bow like its crescent,

I tipped its arrows with points like stars.

And often my shoulders there were draped

With the baldric of a keen-edged, cleaving sword.

I strike with it, but longing strikes more mightily

Than I, so the mighty yields to the mightier.

Behold, I have become certain that their eyelids

Outdo the prowess of the armored warrior marked with insignia.

So I forgave my Indian sword its fault when it failed

In my palm, and accepted the arrows' excuse.

So may their dwellings be watered, though there

The blows of separation wronged the love-stricken lover.

I love the sanctuary for their sake, and often

I yearn for the gently wafting east wind from the uplands.

And I say, while the gray dove calls out in song

And my tears are like the hue of crimson dye:

    وقد اغتبقت كؤوسها فترنمي

    From you comes song, and from my tears comes wine;

And you have drunk its cups at evening, so sing!

On a pitch-dark night that wears, from the gloom

Of its darkness, a bereaved mother's robe at a funeral.

The breeze rose within it, a Surayji blade—so is

The evening's red glow the blood it shed?

O daughter of the leader of slender lances in battle,

Who can bring me a gazelle in a lion's keeping?

You became unadorned, so my tears began

To stream, scattering the jewels strung in order.

And often the choice gems on its thread rejoiced

When they moved from the neck to the mouth.

The beauties placed pearls upon their bosoms

And the sides of their necks; you placed them in your smiling mouth.

Ah, will noble steeds carry me to dwellings

Showered with the tears of every soul enslaved by love?

Among them, every chestnut claiming kinship with lightning,

Or every gray tracing its lineage to the stars.

The stars watch the star of its white forehead-blaze,

Around which the gloom of dusky dust splits apart.

And night conceals in it a night like itself,

Whenever it runs beneath the wing of jet-black darkness.

It glides with me between keen-edged swords, just as

You have seen the speckled serpent gliding in water.

Nothing is swifter than it in its arena

    Except Iyad.

Scion of the mighty chiefs who inherited high honor,

    Outstripping in excellence every predecessor,

From every bright-faced man crowned with glory,

Or every splendid man wearing generosity's signet.

Radiant men—when time and its calamities turn black,

They dispel its deep darkness with bright favors.

They built lofty honors and noble endeavors into towers

To which the shining stars ascend by a ladder.

And from them sprang Abu al-Fadl, whose right hand

Holds bounty beyond the rainfall of drizzling clouds.

Lives that remind us of the legends of those

Who were the pillars of the most ancient age.

Their stars resemble the stars hurled as missiles; if

The devils of calamity rebel, they are stoned.

O jewel of intellects, take this jewel:

But for the thread of your greatness, it could not be strung.

They fall short of the generosity you possess, and of

Favors, and virtues like the gleaming stars,

And manifold graces whose varieties I have gathered,

So I strode proudly in brocade finely patterned with them.

And when I send you praise, I merely

Offer with it a trickle to a brimming sea.
