أَلشمسُ مهما لُحتَ نبراسُ
O fawn whose dwelling is Fez,
O fragrance whose dwelling is Fez
the sun, whenever you appear, is but a lamp.
However the sun rises, it is outshone

Are those your sidelocks appearing on your cheeks, or
By your temples in your cheeks that revealed
have roses and myrtle been planted there?
Where roses and myrtle were planted

And has your supple waist bent in intoxication,
And your soft waist that bent with delight
or is it a swaying bough of the grove?
Is it a branch for a doe to graze?

Your lashes suffice as wine, and your cheek
and breaths of your fragrance.
From which your breath flows

تُردي ظُباها بالكميِّ الفارسِ
And a slender, dark-lipped youth, with an eye
A smooth-cheeked doe with a lovely glance
whose blades lay the armored horseman low—
She feeds her fawns in the thickets

His attributes did to my heart such torment
what breezes do to a swaying bough.
As the breeze does to the pliant branch

Like a bough shaken upon a dune of loose sand,
Like a bough shaken over a hillock
like dawn brought forth beneath a pitch-dark night.
Like dawn risen beneath a gloomy night

O Abu al-Walid, you have indeed cast glances
Abu al-Walid, you have understood a passionate lover
whose bows' arrows have lodged deep in the wretched one.
Whose harsh arrows pierce the miserable
