    O bird of the bān tree, if you find someone entrusted

    with love’s secret, let not the bān tree know it.

    Indeed, the maidens are branches that hold sway,

    and branches have raided the branches.

    My sorrow and yours are bound together by one cord,

    except that my eyelids shed torrents and ceaseless showers.

    I weep for al-ʿAqīq and the days gone by there.

    May a rumbling cloud of ceaseless rain water al-ʿAqīq.

    فالقلبُ ظام وجفنُ العين ريَّان

    For whenever my tears increase, they increase my thirst;

    for the heart is thirsty, while the eyelid is drenched.
