My two friends, what excuse can I offer the caravan, now that

their nights have ended, yet life has not?

    حياتيَ يوماً بعد فُرْقَتِهِ غَدْرُ

    I wept, but weeping did not pay a tearful eye its due;

my living even one day after parting from him is betrayal.

My anguish is only for a radiant-faced man: if he travels

with the full moon late at night, people ask, 'Which of the two is the full moon?'

May God watch over Abd Allah, wherever they head—

his riding camels—or wherever the travelers alight with him.

I bid him farewell while the night lodges in my ribs

anxieties brought on by yearning and thought.

To God I complain of departure after departure,

with which Time burdens us, true to its old ways.

Ah, would that I knew—calamities are many—

when the fresh calamity will desist from its folly.

Must Ibn Daʾya, the raven, each day deal a deadly blow,

repeated or new, in the courtyards of homes?

Indeed, the days have labored between me and you,

with one hand stringing together, and another scattering.

    فمنْ لفؤادي أنْ يدومَ له الهجر

    I once complained of an hour's estrangement from you;

who, then, will help my heart bear estrangement that endures?

Peace upon your days, as long as the rain weeps,

and may that time be blessed with rain, as long as flowers smile.

As though we had never spent a night in safety's shade, enfolded

    in green mantles of the deep-dark night;

nor drunk those conversations as evening wine—

and many a gathering has the sweetness of talk for its wine!

Ah, in God's keeping be the one whom, every hour,

my longing for him brings anew to mind.

Lightning reminds me of him, joyful and smiling,

and dawn reminds me of the radiance of his brow.

And whenever the garden's flowers shimmer, there appear

before my eyes his radiant graces.

So, O place of farewell, no wonder that I

have borne away from it more than a breast can hold.

For, by God, the heart has no solace after you,

nor have the crimson tears any excuse if they do not flow.
