نَبَّهْتُهُI roused him ونجومُand the stars الليلِof the night زاهرةٌshining
والفجرُand dawn منصدعٌbreaking والصبحُand morning قدalready لاحاappeared
I roused him while the stars of night were shining,
I woke him while the stars of night still shone bright,
And dawn was breaking, and morning had appeared;
The dawn was cracking, the morn had started to light,
والليلُand the night منهزمٌrouted وَلَّتْfled عساكرُهُits armies
والروضُand the garden مبتسمٌsmiling والزهرُand the blossoms قدalready فاحاgave off fragrance
And night was routed—its armies had fled—
The night was retreating, its armies had flown,
And the garden was smiling, and the blossoms had released their fragrance.
The meadow was smiling, the flowers had blown,
فقامthen he rose يمسحُhe wipes عينيهhis eyes براحتهِwith his palm
فخلتُهُso I thought him فيin ظلامِthe darkness الليلِof the night مصباحاa lamp
Then he rose, wiping his eyes with his palm,
He rose and with palms rubbed the sleep from his eyes,
So I thought him a lamp in the darkness of night.
I left him, a lamp in night's darkness that lies.
