أحنُّI yearn إلىfor دينِthe faith of اليهودِthe Jews منfor أجلهِhis sake
أحنُّ إلى دينِ اليهودِ من أجلهِ
ولولاand were it not for حذارُfear of السيفِthe sword كنتُI would be يهوديَّاa Jew
ولولا حذارُ السيفِ كنتُ يهوديَّا
I yearn for the faith of the Jews for his sake.
I long for the religion of the Jews because of him
And were it not for fear of the sword, I would be a Jew.
And were it not for fear of the sword, I would be a Jew
ولستُand I do not أخافُfear السيفَthe sword إلاَّexcept لأننيbecause I
ولستُ أخافُ السيفَ إلاَّ لأنني
أموتُI die بأشواقيwith my longings وأتركهand I leave him حيَّاalive
أموتُ بأشواقي وأتركه حيَّا
And I fear the sword only because
It is not the sword I fear but that
I would die with my longings and leave him alive.
I die of yearning while it remains alive
