حدائقُ الحسنِ تُغْري السُّهْدَ بالحدَقِ

حدائقُ الحسنِ تُغْري السُّهْدَ بالحدَقِ

فالعينُ متْرَعَةُ الأجفانِ منْ أَرَقِ

فالعينُ متْرَعَةُ الأجفانِ منْ أَرَقِ

Beauty's gardens set sleeplessness upon the eyes,

The gardens of beauty allure the meadows with charm

so the eye's lids brim with sleeplessness.

So the eye is a pasture for the eyelids from vigil

أشيمُ للبرقِ منْ مسراهمُ قَبَساً

أشيمُ للبرقِ منْ مسراهمُ قَبَساً

والليلُ يَسْحَبُ أذيالاً من الغَسَق

والليلُ يَسْحَبُ أذيالاً من الغَسَق

I watch for a gleam of lightning from the path of their night journey,

I kindle a lightning bolt from its path for light

while night drags skirts of deep darkness,

And the night drags its trains from the dusk

حتى استهلَّ الغمامُ الجَوْد مُنْسَكِباً

حتى استهلَّ الغمامُ الجَوْد مُنْسَكِباً

بوادقٍ من مُلِثِّ القَطْرِ مُنْدَفَقِ

بوادقٍ من مُلِثِّ القَطْرِ مُنْدَفَقِ

until the cloud began pouring abundant rain,

Until the clouds poured forth generosity overflowing

in a shower of ceaseless rain, streaming forth,

With showers from the pouring of abundant rain

في روضةٍ قد ثَنَتْ أَعطافها سَحَراً

في روضةٍ قد ثَنَتْ أَعطافها سَحَراً

يُفَضُّ منها ختامُ الزَّهْرِ عن عَبَق

يُفَضُّ منها ختامُ الزَّهْرِ عن عَبَق

in a garden that had bent its flanks before dawn,

In a meadow which folded its borders like magic

where the seal of blossoms is broken to release fragrance.

From which overflows the seal of flowers with fragrance

ترنو الحمائمُ منها في ذُرى قُضُبٍ

ترنو الحمائمُ منها في ذُرى قُضُبٍ

تَخْتالُ مائسةً في سُنْدُسِ الورق

تَخْتالُ مائسةً في سُنْدُسِ الورق

Doves gaze from it, atop boughs,

The doves coo towards it through the plumes of branches

strutting and swaying in the fine silk of leaves.

Strutting about saturated in the brocade of leaves

كمْ قد عَهِدْنا بها من ليلةٍ قَصُرَتْ

كمْ قد عَهِدْنا بها من ليلةٍ قَصُرَتْ

وإن نأى كلكلُ الظلما عن الفلق

وإن نأى كلكلُ الظلما عن الفلق

How many a night we knew there passed swiftly,

How often we were accustomed to it on a night made brief

although darkness's heavy breast lay far from dawn.

Even if the darkness kept away from the horizon

إذا ابتغيتُ كؤوسَ الراحِ مُتْرَعةً

إذا ابتغيتُ كؤوسَ الراحِ مُتْرَعةً

أَوْمَتْ إليَّ يدُ الأصباحِ بالشفق

أَوْمَتْ إليَّ يدُ الأصباحِ بالشفق

When I sought brimming cups of wine,

When I sought cups of comfort like a pasture

the hand of dawn beckoned to me with its rosy glow.

The hand of dawn gestured to me with the glow

يديرُها البدرُ صِرْفاً فوقَ راحتِهِ

يديرُها البدرُ صِرْفاً فوقَ راحتِهِ

والشمسُ تطلعُ منْ يُمناه في أفق

والشمسُ تطلعُ منْ يُمناه في أفق

The full moon passes it round, unmixed, upon his palm,

The full moon passes it from hand to hand above its rest

and the sun rises from his right hand on the horizon.

And the sun rises from its right on the horizon

ثم انبرى مائلاً للوصلِ ذو ضمرٍ

ثم انبرى مائلاً للوصلِ ذو ضمرٍ

في لؤلؤ من نفيس الدرِّ متَّسقِ

في لؤلؤ من نفيس الدرِّ متَّسقِ

Then a slender one stepped forth, inclined to union,

Then it set out leaning for union, with earnest intent

in pearls of the choicest kind, evenly arrayed.

In a pearl made of strung gems of precious pearl

يا مَن غدا لحسامِ البغي منتضياً

يا مَن غدا لحسامِ البغي منتضياً

يستثبتُ الصَّرم حتى عادَ ذا رنق

يستثبتُ الصَّرم حتى عادَ ذا رنق

O you who have come to draw the sword of injustice,

O you who tomorrow set out to the deviation of tyranny

seeking to cement estrangement until you became sullied.

Brandishing the sword until it returned sharp

والبغي ما زال في الحساد مكتملاً

والبغي ما زال في الحساد مكتملاً

يبدو لمختبرٍ في الخَلْقِ والخُلق

يبدو لمختبرٍ في الخَلْقِ والخُلق

And injustice has always been full-grown in the envious,

And deviation still survives among the envious

visible to an examiner in both appearance and character.

Appearing to one who tests in nature and ethics

لا تنكرنَّ بديعَ النظمِ منْ أدبي

لا تنكرنَّ بديعَ النظمِ منْ أدبي

فالدرُّ ليس بمكنونٍ على الفلق

فالدرُّ ليس بمكنونٍ على الفلق

Do not deny the marvelous verse of my literary art,

Do not deny the eloquence of my poetry and literature

for pearls are not concealed from the discerning.

For pearls are not hidden from the horizon

ولتحذرِ الرشقَ من سهمٍ عرضتَ له

ولتحذرِ الرشقَ من سهمٍ عرضتَ له

منْ يزحمِ البحرَ لا يأمنْ مِنَ الغرق

منْ يزحمِ البحرَ لا يأمنْ مِنَ الغرق

And beware the shot of an arrow you have exposed yourself to;

And beware the splash from an arrow you were exposed to

whoever jostles the sea is not safe from drowning.

Who barges the sea is not safe from drowning

ما أنت مدركُ شأوي إنْ سعيت له

ما أنت مدركُ شأوي إنْ سعيت له

ليس التبخترُ كالإرقال في الطرق

ليس التبخترُ كالإرقال في الطرق

You cannot reach my mark, even if you strive for it;

You cannot attain my status if you sought it

strutting is not like swift trotting along the roads.

Arrogance is not like striding on the roads

ولا المؤمّل في مضمارِ حَلْبَتِهِ

ولا المؤمّل في مضمارِ حَلْبَتِهِ

مؤملاً للمجليِّ السبق في طَلق

مؤملاً للمجليِّ السبق في طَلق

Nor is the eighth-place horse, on its field's racecourse,

Nor is the hopeful in the hippodrome of its track

expected to outstrip the leader in a gallop.

Hoping the excelled will first set off in release

وقد تُشَبَّهُ أحياناً بذي أدبٍ

وقد تُشَبَّهُ أحياناً بذي أدبٍ

ما لم يحاددكَ عذب اللفظ في نسق

ما لم يحاددكَ عذب اللفظ في نسق

And you may sometimes be likened to a man of letters,

And sometimes it may resemble a man of refinement

so long as one of sweet diction does not challenge you in verse.

If clear wording did not limit you in composition

والأوسُ في فَلَوَاتِ البيدِ مفترسٌ

والأوسُ في فَلَوَاتِ البيدِ مفترسٌ

فإنْ يَصُلْ ليثُ غابٍ مات من فرق

فإنْ يَصُلْ ليثُ غابٍ مات من فرق

And the wolf is a predator in the deserts' open wastes,

The wolf in the expanse of the desert is a predator

but if a forest lion charges, it dies of fright.

If the lion of the forest arrives, it dies of horror

فلا تمدّنَّ باعَ العُجْبِ إنَّ لها

فلا تمدّنَّ باعَ العُجْبِ إنَّ لها

عُقبى تؤجِّجُ نارَ الضَّغْنِ والحنق

عُقبى تؤجِّجُ نارَ الضَّغْنِ والحنق

So do not extend the reach of conceit, for it has

So do not extend the sale of conceit, for it

an aftermath that kindles the fire of rancor and rage.

Has consequences that ignite the fire of rage and malice
