بنهرِby a river روضٍa garden سُندُسيِّof fine silk الورقِthe leaves
And a day of delight—its late afternoon charmed us,
On a day of intimacy we strolled
By a river in a garden with silken leaves.
By a river, its leaves glossy green,
لماwhen توارتْhid from view بالحجابِbehind the veil شمسُهُits sun

When its sun vanished behind the veil,
When its sun hid behind a veil
And its hours shone moon-bright at dusk,
And its hours donned the dusk's screen,
أطلَّappeared منfrom أُفْقِthe horizon السماءِthe sky كوكبٌa star

A star appeared from the sky’s horizon,
A star peered out of the sky's rim,
Above the river channel, shining clear and bright.
Bright and sparkling on the scene,

والنجمُand the star فيهin it كذبالٍlike a wick مُشْرِقِglowing
And the river was clear, its water silvered,
The limpid river in splendor flowed,
And the star in it was like a glowing wick,
The star within it dazzling, serene,

Which a lovely maiden carries at her breast,
Borne by a beauty whose charm I adored,
For fear of the east wind, beneath a blue veil.
Veiled in blue, fearing the zephyr’s keen.
