A composition conveyed by the author of The Unique Pearl,
Is the greatest mainstay for anyone who is a poet.

تلقَّفَهُ زيدٌ وعَمرو وعامِرُ
He recounted finely crafted verse, ascribing it to the scholar,
Which Zaid, Amr and Amir related,
Which Zayd, ʿAmr, and ʿAmir eagerly took up:
When the strikes of worries upset the youth,
إذاwhen طارقاتُnight visitors of الهَمِّworry ضاجَعَتِlay beside الفَتىthe young man
إذا طارقاتُ الهَمِّ ضاجَعَتِ الفَتى

وأعمَلَ فكرَ الليلِ والليلُ عاكرُ
“When night-visiting cares lay beside a young man,
And the thoughts of night occupied him while it darkened,
And he set his thoughts to work by night, while the night was murky,
He called upon me for a need he found no helper for,

And came to me at dawn with a need for which he found
Nor anyone to save him from the days’ afflictions,
None but me, no other helper against time's calamity,
So I relieved his worries which consumed him,

وزايَلَهُ همٌّ طروقٌ مُسامِرُ
I relieved his distress with my wealth as he stood there,
And worries departed which had befriended him,
And the care that visited and kept him company at night left him.
He was virtuous towards me in his assumption,

And he did me a favor by thinking
For I am grateful to those who think good of me,
Well of me; I am grateful for his good opinion.”
So to God belongs such poetry which undertakes

What wondrous verse, by God, that pledges to grant
The hopes of the prayerful and the poets,
What a supplicant hopes for and a frightened man desires!

A man like Ibn Abbas shows you humility,
And the likeness of Ibn Abbas, none other vies,
Yet another of Ibn Abbas's stature would boast.
The likeness of Ibn Abbas relieves an affliction,

And a man like Ibn Abbas dispels the anguish
Which circles who the fates visit early,
That surrounds one whom calamities have met at dawn.
The likeness of Ibn Abbas, for those whose door he attends,

Of their distresses, by your right, I visit,
Their anguish, by your honor I am a visitor.

My heart is a consuming concern, leaving it bewildered.

Many night-visiting troubles have lain beside me,
And the days’ worries, while the days oppress,
And time's sorrows have threatened me, while time is unjust.
I have come to complain of all that has bothered me,

Befell me; today I have no guardian but you.

O my master, my ailments before you are many,
And your sea has no shore however much you give,
Yet no rival has ever surpassed your sea in abundance.
Had I thought of religion, it found me

O my master, if I think about religion, you would deem me
Empty, with no faith filling my heart,
Empty, and my heart is not filled with my faith.

My heart, and I have no intimate companion but you.

It constricts my disposition with its many cares,
And expand me, though I recall,
And gives me room for a time, while I ponder.
At times it preoccupies me with livelihood,

At times it occupies my thoughts with livelihoods,
And shortly, precautions loom in my view,
And at other times, fears array themselves before me.

And if I, on Satan, the self, and desire,
The whole world narrowed around me,
Reflect, the universe and gathering places close in upon me.

I weep; but can weeping help a man gone astray,
Whose sights and insights went astray?
Whose eyes and inward sight have lost their way?

In religion and worldly life, and what is now at hand.
