هذاthis كِتابِيmy letter وكَفُّand the hand الموْتِof death تُزْعِجُنِيdrives me away
عنfrom الحياةِlife وفيand in قَلْبِيmy heart لكمof you ذِكَرُmemories
This is my letter; the hand of death drives me
This is my book, and the approach of death disturbs me,
from life, while my heart holds memories of you.
Takes me away from life, though you are in my heart remembered.
إِنْnot أَقضِكُمI repay you حقَّكُمyour due مِنbecause of قِلَّةٍbrevity عُمُرِيmy life
إِنِّيindeed I إِلىto اللَّهِGod لاno حقٌّclaim ولاand no عُمُرُlife
I have not repaid you your due, so brief is my life;
If I fulfil not your due, the fault lies in my scanty days,
I am bound for God, with neither claim nor life.
To God I owe no duty, no length of days.
لَهفِيmy sorrow علىfor نَيِّراتٍradiant verses ماnever صدعْتُI proclaimed بهاwith them
إِلاexcept وأَظْلَمَand grew dark مِنfrom أَضْوائِهَاtheir light القَمرُthe moon
Alas for those radiant verses: never did I proclaim them
I yearn for the departed, though ne'er again we'll meet,
without the moon growing dark from their light.
Save where no moonlight's radiance can make the darkness retreat.

So convey greetings to al-Mansur, the best of those
Greet in my name Mansur, than whom none nobler fought
who strove to avenge the sons of Islam, and they prevailed.
To venge the Muslim's wrongs, and in their cause prevailed.
واعطِفْand turn بهاwith them عطْفَةًa turn تهتزُّthat quivers مِنfrom كَرمٍgenerosity

And turn them, with a gesture quivering with generosity,
With tenderness greet Muzaffar, whose mighty arm
toward al-Muzaffar, for he is triumph and victory.
Brought victory, and turned the tide of war's alarm.
